Yellowstone’s Luke Grimes reveals why he had a “hard time” on Season 5 Part 2 set

As a dedicated fan of the Yellowstone series, I must say that the return of Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton was a bittersweet moment for me. The two-year hiatus from the show felt like an eternity, and the absence of Kevin Costner was palpable.

Adjusting to being on the Yellowstone set without Kevin Costner wasn’t easy for the rest of the cast, and with a break of two years between seasons, Luke Grimes initially struggled to slip back into his character comfortably.

In January 2023, the latest episode of Yellowstone aired, which means it’s nearly been two years since we last saw this Western drama on our screens. For the actors of Yellowstone, who started filming the final six episodes of the series earlier this year at the Dutton ranch, that’s an even longer wait.

Luke Grimes, the actor portraying Kayce Dutton in the Taylor Sheridan series, shared his feelings about donning those cowboy boots again following a significant hiatus. As one might expect, it was quite a challenge.

He mentioned, “I was finding it extremely challenging to get back into character,” he said [via Variety]. “I’ve portrayed this character for quite some time, but a two-year hiatus… It’s tough to rediscover the subtle details once more.

According to him, reading the script for the last episode was what led him back to finding Kayce once more.

In my case, I deliberately left the climactic episode until the very end, hoping it would draw me back in. And boy, did it ever! I devoured that final installment and ended up in quite a state of emotion. But once I recovered, I thought to myself, “Ah, now I recall who this character truly is!

Besides Grimes having to face his own departure, Kevin Costner’s exit from the series was a major topic of discussion in the latest season and ultimately caused the premature ending of the show.

As a gamer, when I learned that Costner wouldn’t be reprising his role, I felt like I was suddenly the last player left on the team. It was as if I had to pilot the ship all by myself, no more safety net. It was time to take control and steer this project towards a successful landing.

It was inevitable that the patriarch would depart from the narrative, and that’s because the plot had been shaping up that way all along. Essentially, the question becomes: How will the children react? Or, more broadly, what will become of the family now that their pillar of strength is no longer present?

Regardless of the situation, it seemed unmistakably clear that we were preparing for a safe arrival, as if the atmosphere itself was whispering ‘Landing confirmed.’ Certainly, there was an undeniable change in the ambiance.

Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 returns on November 10 on the Paramount Network.
