As a seasoned critic with decades of observing American politics and pop culture under my belt, I must say that Bill Maher‘s latest stint on Real Time was as entertaining as ever. The man has an uncanny knack for distilling complex issues into bite-sized, thought-provoking tidbits. His wit is sharp, his humor biting, and his political commentary always insightful.
Bill Maher capped a week of pop culture reaction to the comeback election of Donald Trump with a few zingers in his monologue on Friday’s edition of HBO’s “Real Time,” including confirmation that “I did not vote for the winner” and a telling disclosure about the West Hollywood pot shop that he co-owns with actor Woody Harrelson.
Maher took a moment to marvel at Trump’s decisive sweep on Election Night.
Bill Maher commented, “Trump swept all the decisive states, all seven, effectively taking them all. Trump’s victory was massive today; he even phoned the Georgia Secretary of State and requested a reduction of 11,000 votes, referencing the controversy surrounding the 2020 election in Georgia that resulted in charges against him. Trump has an impressive supporter base. He managed to retain his loyal followers while attracting new voters as well. I like to call this group the ‘curiosity voters.’
He expressed his support for Vice President Kamala Harris, who is Trump’s Democratic opponent. “Exit polls indicate that he won over 52% of white women voters,” Maher joked, highlighting Trump’s popularity among women.
I’ve observed a shift towards conservative leanings among the electorate, even in progressive cities like Los Angeles. This inclination is evident in the approval of a California state ballot measure that classifies shoplifting as a felony once more. Voters, weary of escalating petty crimes at their neighborhood drug stores and 7-Elevens, seem to be driving this change.
‘Instead of securing the toothpaste itself, let’s focus on securing the stores from shoplifters.’
Maher said the issue of rampant retail crime in major cities “came home to me personally this week.” He disclosed that the Woods, the West Hollywood pot shop that he co-owns with actor Woody Harrelson, was burglarized one day before the Nov. 5 election. He said there has already been an arrest in the case.
I’ve just experienced an interesting turn of events. Intruders forced their way through a window and strode inside, little realizing the irony. You see, they ended up walking right into a trap, because guess who they caught? Yours truly! Our cannabis is so exceptional that even I, in my excitement, momentarily overlooked the need for discretion while tending to it.
Michael Douglas, an actor, was the initial guest on Maher’s show. He praised Maher during their conversation. Known for being the son of Kirk Douglas, a significant figure in Hollywood’s golden age who passed away in 2020 at 101, Douglas mentioned that towards the final stages of his father’s life, he only watched two things: Ultimate Fighting Championship and Maher’s show.
Maher has openly expressed his support for the Democratic Party in this year’s presidential election, recently urging undecided voters to vote for Harris simply because “I’m not Trump” is a strong enough reason on its own. In September, Maher criticized Trump’s statement that “the Jewish people would have a lot to do” with a possible election loss for him.
When an autocrat begins pointing fingers at the Jewish community, it’s usually a warning signal for me since history has shown us such actions rarely have positive outcomes,” Maher expressed on “Real Time.
Trump responded to Maher on his social media platform, Truth Social, labeling him as “a puzzled and disorganized figure, clumsy and fatigued, whose conversations often feature B and C-list guests.
Maher’s remarks regarding the presidential election follow almost every late-night talk show host sharing their thoughts on the election outcome from Tuesday night. Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Taylor Tomlinson, and Seth Meyers all spoke at length about their disappointment with the election results. John Oliver is set to address this topic in the upcoming episode of “Last Week Tonight” on Sunday night.
On last night’s show, Kimmel said that those who had voted against him faced a terrible outcome, and surprisingly, the same goes for those who had voted for him. The impact may not be apparent to them right now.
