As a long-time Potterhead who has grown up with the magical world of Harry Potter, this latest development leaves me bewitched and bewildered. The acquisition of “Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking” by Prime Video for the U.K. is an enchanting move, but the ongoing tussle between Sky and Warner Bros. Discovery over the Potter franchise feels like a bitter battle of wands.
“Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking” has been acquired by Prime Video for the U.K.
The enchanting baking contest series, where teams of bakers create Potter-themed masterpieces in a competitive setting, is scheduled to premiere in the United States on Food Network and Max, Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming platform, beginning November 14th. Fresh episodes will be released every week.
The movie/series is set to stream on Amazon Prime Video in the U.K. starting from December; however, the specific air date remains undisclosed for now.
Globally, “Wizards of Baking” can be found on Max in regions where their streaming service is accessible.
Given that Max isn’t accessible in the U.K. yet, thanks to WBD’s prolonged and profitable content agreement with Sky, which is owned by Comcast, it appeared probable that the series might air on Sky and its streaming service Now.
At present, all Harry Potter content from Warner Bros. Discovery can be found on Now. This includes the eight feature films, as well as two unscripted series: “Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts” and “Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses.” Additionally, you’ll find other Warner Bros. Discovery content on the platform, such as “House of the Dragon” and “The Penguin.
As a devoted cinephile, I’ve found myself pondering about the future of my beloved streaming service, Max, in the U.K., especially since Warner Bros. Discovery has expressed plans to launch it here. The question that lingers is whether this deal will be extended beyond its expiration date at the end of 2025 and what changes might it bring.
The conflicts between these companies seem to be escalating more, predominantly regarding the Potter series, following Sky’s legal action taken in October claiming that Warner Bros. Discovery violated their content deal by declining to collaborate on the forthcoming “Harry Potter” series remake as part of HBO.
According to Sky’s legal claim, Warner’s motivation for failing to meet its commitments is plainly evident. They assert that Warner has opted to retain the Harry Potter series exclusively for its own use and leverage this popular series as the foundation for the European launch of its Max platform.
The show ‘Wizards of Baking’ is presented by James and Oliver Phelps, famously known for their roles as the Weasley twins in the film versions. Each week, judges Carla Hall and Jozef Youssef are joined by a different past ‘Potter’ cast member to help them determine which bakers will advance to the next round, and who will unfortunately be eliminated.
Reps for Sky and Warner Bros. Discover did not respond by press time.
