Nicholas Hoult Heard on the Radio That Robert Pattinson Was Batman and ‘I Was Auditioning Next Weekend’; Losing Role Was an ‘Emotional Blow’

As a passionate admirer of the dynamic world of cinema, I find myself deeply moved by the journey of Nicholas Hoult, a talented actor who has consistently shown his versatility and commitment to his craft. His recent revelation about missing out on the coveted role of Batman in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of showbiz.

On the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Nicholas Hoult shared an unexpected turn of events. While driving in Los Angeles, he learned via radio broadcast that Robert Pattinson had been chosen as the lead for Matt Reeves’ “The Batman.” This was surprising since Hoult himself was preparing to audition for Batman just a few days later. Ultimately, the role went to Pattinson instead of Hoult.

Indeed, it’s quite a blow to one’s emotions,” Hoult acknowledged about missing out on the role of Batman. “On one hand, you understand the practical side: ‘I realize I was competing against Rob.’ And Rob was outstanding in that film. That was the correct decision. But the anticipation gets you excited. Matt [Reeves] is a fantastic director and the script promises an exciting movie. It’s a captivating character. There’s this strange phase before you can reach acceptance, watch the movie, and think ‘that was the right choice,’ where you question: ‘What more could I have done? Why wasn’t it me?’ You go through all those thoughts.

Hoult expressed that trying out for a significant comic book character can be “extremely taxing emotionally,” as it’s particularly challenging due to the constant speculation and reports about potential candidates in the entertainment industry being published instantly.

A week before the Batman test, I was driving in my car with the radio on and they were discussing that Rob would be the new Batman. I responded, ‘That’s not confirmed yet! I have an audition next week. Let me get a shot at it.’

Under Reeves’ direction and Pattinson taking center stage, “The Batman” garnered outstanding reviews and grossed $770 million globally. Notably, EbMaster film critic Owen Gleiberman ranked this superhero blockbuster as the third best movie of 2022. A follow-up is slated to begin production in the upcoming year.

Despite missing out on Batman, Hoult is set to star in a significant comic book blockbuster as Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman”. Initially, Hoult tried out for Superman himself, but after discussing with Gunn, they found that the role of the iconic villain seemed more suitable. Hoult praised Gunn for making the audition process for “Superman” a seamless experience.

Michael Douglas expressed his admiration for James Gunn’s exceptional directing skills and shared his anticipation about what Gunn was developing at DC. During their conversation, they recognized that Douglas had already been through the Batman process and therefore, they didn’t wish for him to repeat it again. This gesture of consideration from the team was thoughtful. Essentially, they appreciated Douglas as an actor and wanted him to be a part of their universe.

Previously, Hoult praised Pattinson’s performance in “The Batman”, stating that he believes Pattinson did an exceptional job. He further expressed his belief that he might not have been able to deliver a comparable performance. Additionally, he mentioned that he felt Pattinson seemed more suited to the world that Matt Reeves created for the film compared to himself.
