As an admirer of the thriving world of film and animation, I find myself utterly captivated by the upcoming project, “Gravityland,” led by the prolific and versatile Pablo Agüero. With a career spanning various mediums and genres, Agüero’s impressive body of work is a testament to his artistic prowess. His ability to weave compelling narratives that resonate with audiences on a deeply human level is truly commendable.
Spanish studio Mil Monos Cine and Argentinian studio Cosmic Brew Studios are collaborating to produce the 2D animated feature film “Gravityland,” directed by renowned filmmaker Pablo Agüero who hails from Argentina but is based in Spain. This project has been chosen for pitching at this year’s Animation! sidebar event during Ventana Sur.
In the movie, a cave researcher goes missing while exploring anomalies in the earth’s gravitational pull. When the planet experiences a reversal of gravity, the expert’s offspring embark on an expedition into the planet’s core, realizing that when things are flipped around, one must leap into the abyss to reach the heavens above.
Agüero is a versatile filmmaker with experience across different film formats and styles. In 2006, his short film “Primera nieve” earned the jury’s best short film prize at Cannes, while his 2008 feature “Salamandra” was screened in competition at a French festival. This year, he directed “Saint-Exupéry,” featuring Vincent Cassel, Louis Garrel, and Diane Kruger. In 2020, his film “Coven” stood out at San Sebastian and received nine nominations for Spanish Academy Goya Awards, ultimately winning five.
Agüero is teaming up with Nicolás Britos to pen the script for “Gravityland.” Notably, Britos has a strong portfolio of live-action projects, but he also co-authored the 2020 film “Lava,” which was selected for Annecy Contrechamp. Alongside Britos in production duties are Sol Cifuentes (known for “Diablo Viejo” and “Wixi Against the Binary Lens”) and Maximiliano Monzon (“Diablo Viejo” and “La Vagancia”).
Britos stated, “For the first time, Agüero’s distinctive visual style is used in animation for ‘Gravityland’. This isn’t just about discovering impossible realms; it’s also an opportunity to breathe life into complex characters, grappling with their identity in a world that has undergone drastic and unrecognizable changes – socially, familial, and otherwise.
The film’s creators are reportedly negotiating with a top European comic book artist to contribute to the creation of the visual universe in “Gravityland.
Mil Monos, headquartered in Barcelona, specializes in film, television, and transmedia ventures. At present, they have a number of exciting projects underway, such as “Decibel,” a dystopian coming-of-age series spearheaded by Agüero, which was chosen for the Co-Pro Series market at Berlinale, and “The Numbered Days,” a project selected for the Berlinale Talent Project Market. This summer, the company also tasted success in animation with its short animated film “Wixi Against the Binary Lens,” which was picked for Annecy.
Cosmic Brew, an independent studio located in Buenos Aires, boasts expertise in virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), video game production, and computer-generated (CG) animation. This versatile company has created numerous customized animated shorts specifically for the internal purposes of a prominent worldwide financial institution.
