Late Night Braces for Trump 2.0

As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for late-night television, I must say that the current state of affairs has left me feeling like a kid who just found out there’s no more candy in the Halloween bag – disappointed, but still ready to find the humor in it all.

How is everyone faring these days? With Donald Trump potentially returning to the spotlight for more years of comedy, the late-night show hosts seem less than thrilled about it. As Dorinda Medley might say, “They’re not handling it too well.” Late Night With Seth Meyers, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, After Midnight, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Daily Show, and Jimmy Kimmel Live! all addressed the audience directly following Donald Trump’s election and Kamala Harris’s concession. These hosts had to juggle their own feelings with their duty to entertain us and help us relax. This is how they’re coping.

“Welp!” That’s how Seth Meyers started Late Night. Meyers also joked about having gone to an election watch party. Can you imagine? He said watching results come in was “like Christmas Eve, if you know on Christmas morning, you’re either going to wake up to find that Santa left presents under the tree or to find that Santa just took a huge dump in your fireplace.” Meyers said doing his job, even under these circumstances, is a privilege. “This is a joyful place to work,” he said. “We’re not going to let anything take that joy away, even when we’re not talking about things that are not particularly joyful.” Meyers said the show’s mission is to find laughter and joy: “Let’s fucking go.”

Lydic experienced her second taste of despair, as Jon Stewart was on air last night. She described the world as a “continuous nightmare,” and expressed her feelings by saying, “It seems like we’re destined to get every other ‘first’ before we get a female president.” She joked about having a “first Amish president” or a “first Wahlberg president” and even suggested a dog could potentially hold the office. Furthermore, she noted that the rules regarding who can be president seem to be evolving, hinting at the possibility of more surprises in the future.

Initially, Tomlinson expressed sympathies towards those celebrating their birthdays this week. “It’s a privilege to be on television at a time when women are still free,” she stated. Later, Tomlinson revealed that she resorted to rewatching the series ‘Game of Thrones’ in an attempt to find some peace and perhaps gain a fresh perspective.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert: “You Are Not Alone”

Colbert started off by acknowledging that he wasn’t feeling top-notch, but he was thankful for having his role and being surrounded by such a hilarious group of individuals. People had sympathized with him, saying they were sorry he had to do the show tonight. However, Colbert emphasized that he didn’t have to do the show; instead, he got to do it tonight. He was deeply appreciative to be working alongside so many talented people.

The Tonight Show: America Is Back With Their Crazy Ex

Jimmy Fallon likened Trump’s potential re-election to reuniting with an old, troublesome ex. He stated, “Regardless of whom you voted for, we can all concur: Thanksgiving is going to be quite challenging.” Fallon also expressed that it was a remarkable return for someone who had never truly disappeared from the spotlight.

Jimmy Kimmel Live!: “I’m Leaving the Country”

Jimmy Kimmel’s show commenced with an opening segment where Kimmel joked about leaving the country. He expressed that the previous Taco Tuesday was the worst one of his life, and compared Trump to the character Emperor Palpatine, stating that he is aged, malevolent, and inexplicably persistent. Furthermore, Kimmel shared that his son exclaimed a strong expletive upon learning about Trump’s victory.
