As a long-time observer of American politics and a frequent late-night talk show viewer, I find Seth Meyers‘ latest monologue to be both entertaining and thought-provoking. His ability to blend humor with incisive commentary on current events is truly remarkable.
Seth Meyers is worried about more than just Donald Trump’s second term.
In fact, it seems that Donald Trump has emerged victorious in the 2024 election and is set to serve another term as president, possibly for four more years, eight, or even twelve. This was his first segment after Election Day, and he delivered it with a concerned chuckle. It appears we’re in an era where Donald Trump is at the heart of everything, an eternal presence that cannot be avoided. We can only pay our respects to our strong and compassionate ruler, the all-powerful and benevolent supreme leader.
As a movie buff, I’d like to clarify something: when Meyers made that joke, he was indeed poking fun. The 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution sets a limit, preventing anyone from serving more than two terms as president. Now, Trump did share an edited video online, where Time magazine’s cover seemed to suggest his endless re-election bids in the future. But remember, it was just a playful depiction and not a reflection of any actual possibility.
Moving forward, Meyers stated, “Windmills are linked to cancer. Hannibal Lecter was truly kind-hearted. If I’m deceiving you, then Arnold Palmer isn’t the most endowed member at the golf club. Shock me!” (This version retains the same meaning while using more polite and professional language.)
After persistently criticizing Trump – highlighting his unique status as the oldest individual to become president and the first to be a convicted felon, while poking fun at his inaugural address – Meyers decided to direct his attention towards some of the president-elect’s backers instead.
Meyers humorously questioned if, when RFK Jr. becomes health secretary, his parasitic worm from Kennedy’s presidential campaign would become a subordinate, like an assistant secretary. He playfully added: ‘Will the worm hold press conferences, with a mini podium on top of RFK Jr.’s head?’
Elon Musk, the wealthy entrepreneur responsible for Tesla, SpaceX, and the transformation of Twitter into X, became the focus of Meyer’s criticism.
He stated that while they might appear as edgy podcasters, these individuals are actually oligarchs in disguise. In reality, the wealthiest person on earth, whose company is involved with the Pentagon and owns a major social media platform, has joined forces once again with another billionaire who is poised to gain immense power. They aren’t your casual friends; they won’t be dropping by for a weed session and Diablo game at your place.
Meyers didn’t beat around the bush regarding his concerns for the future. “If Donald Trump regains power,” he stated, “he has explicitly outlined his intentions: harsh roundups of immigrants using a militaristic approach, utilizing the might of the government to suppress opponents and pursue personal vendettas, abolishing the Department of Education, allowing climate change to progress unchecked, propagating conspiracy theories about healthcare and vaccines. He claimed he would act as a dictator from day one.
However, as the “Late Night” host concluded the segment, he offered a message filled with optimism: “With Trump’s ominous vision for America rejected by tens of millions last night, we now ask, what will be our actions on day one? If you’re among those who voted against this dark and perilous vision, it’s time to unite with our friends, neighbors, and vulnerable communities, and embark on the challenging task of creating the world we yearn for. That’s what we plan to do on day one. We truly hope you’ll join us in this endeavor. The clock is ticking.
