As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for global cinema, I find myself thoroughly intrigued by the ambitious plans of Phantom Studios, led by the dynamic Srishti Behl. Having spent years navigating the labyrinthine world of international film at Netflix India and Balaji Telefilms, her focus on creatively ambitious projects aligns with my own cinematic sensibilities.
Phantom Studios, an Indian film production company, is planning a variety of films for cinematic release. This was mentioned by CEO Srishti Behl at the Taiwan Creative Content Fest (TCCF), where she currently serves on the jury panel.
Leading its lineup is the Hindi-language adaptation of the Tamil blockbuster “Love Today,” titled “Loveyapa,” set to hit theaters in February 2025. Additionally, the studio is progressing with an as-yet-unnamed drama helmed by Rahul Dholakia (“Raees”) and featuring Vikrant Massey (“12th Fail”). Regarding this project, Behl commented, “It’s a drama set in an uncommon environment that explores the bond between a mother and son.” Over a period of six years, Dholakia has developed this intriguing narrative.
The firm is introducing its new director, Saurabh Gupta, who will star in an eagerly anticipated, captivating, and action-packed romantic tale according to Behl’s description. Meanwhile, “Manjummel Boys” director Chidambaram is wrapping up the final details of his upcoming script for the studio, with an estimated completion date within four to six weeks. Furthermore, a biographical film is currently in production as well.
Previously known as Phantom Films, the production company was initially established by renowned Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap (“Gangs of Wasseypur”), along with his fellow directors and producers Vikramaditya Motwane (“Bhavesh Joshi Superhero”), Vikas Bahl (“Queen”) and Madhu Mantena (“Trapped”). However, their seven-year collaboration came to an end in 2018.
According to Behl, who used to head international original films at Netflix India, this new phase of Phantom aims to feature people embarking on incredibly innovative creative ventures. We aspire to reach this level and believe it will motivate audiences to visit cinemas.
To tackle issues within the theater industry, Behl underscored the significance of sparking interest among spectators. She stated, “The most effective advice anyone can offer isn’t about marketing or appearing in a production or on a billboard. Instead, it’s the endorsement from your fellow audience members.
Concerning the growing influence of Tamil and Telugu films across India, Behl emphasized that compelling narratives surpass language hurdles. “Stories resonate with audiences regardless of the tongue they’re spun in,” she pointed out. “The key is to concentrate on our own work instead of others’. While we can appreciate foreign films, the method for people to appreciate our films is by focusing squarely on their quality.
At TCCF, Behl serves on the jury, reviewing projects spanning series, movies, documentaries, and animations. She finds it almost educational to see how various storytelling methods are being employed, and she’s eagerly looking for chances to collaborate on projects between Taiwan and India.
At Phantom Studios, the main concentration continues to be on theater releases. However, Behl’s past experiences at Balaji Telefilms and Netflix add value. She underscored that the studio is primarily dedicated to generating theatrical content, yet it maintains a readiness for episodic storytelling if an appealing project surfaces.
