A24’s ‘Heretic’ Aims for $10 Million in Box Office Debut, ‘Venom 3’ Likely to Top Charts Again

As a lifelong cinephile who has seen more movies than I can count on one hand (and a few on the other), I find myself intrigued by this week’s box office predictions. With “Venom: The Last Dance” seemingly holding strong despite the arrival of two newcomers, it seems that the symbiote saga continues to captivate audiences.

Despite the arrival of two new nationwide films, ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ could potentially claim a third victory at the domestic box office.

In the upcoming weekends, A24’s horror-thriller “Heretic” plans to earn between $8 million and $10 million across 3,200 movie theaters, while Lionsgate’s faith-based family film “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” aims for $6 million to $8 million from approximately 3,000 venues. On the other hand, it is projected that “Venom 3” will experience a decrease of around 40%-50% compared to its previous weekend, resulting in ticket sales of around $13 million to $15 million in its third outing.

In its final chapter, “Sony’s Venom: The Last Dance,” the third movie of the Tom Hardy-starring comic book series, has earned $91 million in North America and a total of $318 million so far. Despite not reaching the heights of other Venom films like the 2018 original which grossed an impressive $856 million worldwide or “Let There Be Carnage” with its $506 million global earnings, this film is expected to perform well against its production budget of $120 million.

These two films could do better than expected due to positive word-of-mouth and a less crowded movie market. The additional revenue would be helpful for theaters, which have seen a decline in earnings since October, with revenues down more than 11% from 2023 and about 27% from 2019.

Most significant film studios decided to hold off on releasing films near the election due to worries that people’s focus would solely be on the presidential race. Therefore, moviegoing is not anticipated to increase significantly until Amazon’s Christmas comedy “Red One,” featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Santa’s head of security, premieres on November 15. This will be followed by the releases of Paramount’s “Gladiator II” and Universal’s “Wicked” on November 22, with Disney’s “Moana 2” set to debut on November 27.

Titled “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” this unique religious story revolves around the six notoriously mischievous Herdman siblings, known throughout town for their misbehavior. However, when they take control of the church’s annual pageant, they might just discover the essence of Christmas. Directed by Dallas Jenkins, creator of “The Chosen,” this heartwarming film stars Judy Greer, Pete Holmes, and Lauren Graham.
