As a devoted fan who’s been sailing through the swashbuckling seas of Monkey Island since the days of the original game, I can’t help but feel a thrill of excitement upon hearing about The Booze of Monkey Island. Being shipwrecked on Booty Island all over again, with LeChuck lurking around every corner, is an experience that never loses its charm.
Even though Ron Gilbert returned to the Monkey Island series with “Return to Monkey Island” in 2022, it remains uncertain if or when another official sequel will be released. However, this hasn’t deterred a passionate community of Monkey Island enthusiasts from creating their own unofficial game titled “The Booze of Monkey Island.
The new title is referred to as a heartfelt “homage” to the original Monkey Island games from Bean Adventure Agency, a small studio known for producing The Tale of Monkey Island. Just like the previous games, you’ll take on the character of Guybrush Threepwood in a classic point-and-click adventure. While it may not be a full-length game, it certainly evokes the charm of its ancestors.
Following a harrowing shipwreck, Guybrush unexpectedly returns to Booty Island, last encountered in Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. It’s worth mentioning that LeChuck, his longtime adversary, has resurfaced to cause trouble for him and his partner, Elaine. In light of this predicament, Guybrush must swiftly leave Booty Island. The local tavern keeper consents to aid Guybrush in fixing his ship under one condition: Guybrush needs to generate some patronage at the bar first.
At the moment, The Booze from Monkey Island is available in early access, meaning it’s not fully completed yet, but it already resembles a refined take on the previous games in the series. Bean Adventure Agency is offering the game for free on their site, emphasizing that this is a non-commercial project. However, since Disney (who acquired Lucasfilm in 2012 and now owns the Monkey Island series) might eventually request or even require the title to be taken down, it’s best to experience or download The Booze of Monkey Island as soon as possible.
