As a film enthusiast who has seen more movies than I can count (and that’s saying something), I must admit that John Oliver’s emotional plea for voters was a rare moment of genuine emotion in an otherwise satirical world. While I, too, am an immigrant and have felt the pull to vote for candidates who represent the values we hold dear, his passion resonated with me on a personal level.
On Monday, John Oliver made a visit to “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” where he discussed the popular video that encouraged viewers to cast their votes for Kamala Harris, as the host of “Last Week Tonight.
Oliver captured attention with his emotional appeal to voters, visibly holding back tears as he expressed, “You know, I have deep affection for this nation. I’m an immigrant who willingly settled here.” He further disclosed his intention to cast his vote in favor of Vice President Harris.
However, Oliver informed Colbert that he was utterly astonished by the extent of attention the video garnered. “I wasn’t weeping,” Oliver explained, “I’m British. I’ve got no feelings left.
In the realm of cinematic experiences, I must confess that I rarely hold back my emotions except when watching movies on board an aircraft. The latest film to stir tears in me amidst the friendly skies was the hilarious figure skating comedy “Blades of Glory” starring Will Ferrell and Jon Heder.
As a movie-goer penning my thoughts, I can’t help but share my sentiments about the essence of democracy that I experienced firsthand during an election day. Unlike some who opt for early voting or mail-in ballots, I find immense joy in standing in line on that particular day. This act, for me, is not just about casting my vote, but rather it’s a symbolic gesture I call “democracy edging.” It’s like standing shoulder to shoulder with fellow citizens, letting others go ahead of me at the polling place, all contributing to the greater good of our democratic process.
Colbert inquired Oliver about their ongoing disagreement with Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, who’s been actively endorsing Donald Trump during his political rallies.
Oliver believes one aspect about him is that he has a deep affection for humor,” said Oliver. “He strives to make people laugh, but sadly, wealth cannot purchase wit. Thus, inherently, he’ll never truly be amusing, and this constant effort may leave an empty space in his heart, a yearning for laughter he can never quite reach. This longing may persist as an unfillable void within him.
