Squid Game creator explains why show has to end with Season 3

As a seasoned gamer and binge-watcher, I can confidently say that the announcement of Squid Game Season 3 has sent shivers of excitement down my spine. The first season was a rollercoaster ride of suspense, action, and emotion, leaving me on the edge of my seat (or couch, in this case) until the very end.

In simple terms, the mastermind behind Squid Game shared his reasons for concluding the series with Season 3 and emphasized that there are currently no intentions to continue the storyline past that point.

The sensational series “Squid Game” captured global attention upon its debut on Netflix in September 2021. Surprisingly, there were no initial plans for additional seasons; however, the creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has devised a plan for two more installments. Excitingly, season two of this popular show is scheduled to release on Netflix on December 26, 2024.

In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Dong-hyuk shared his reasons for returning to work on Squid Game for another season, despite the immense pressure that came after the first season’s phenomenal success. Moreover, he clarified why Season 3 seems like the most fitting conclusion for bringing the highly acclaimed series to a close.

Initially, Dong-hyuk admitted that he hadn’t laid out a comprehensive plan for a second season following the completion of Season 1.

However, given the “huge amount of anticipation”, he decided to move forward with the storyline.

Even though I didn’t have any grand schemes initially, a notion about a tale took shape in my mind. In this story, Gi-hun, skillfully portrayed by Lee Jung-jae, would find himself back in the games. However, his objective wouldn’t just be to survive; he’d aim to put an end to these games once and for all.

For seasons two and three, we’ll delve deeper into Gi-hun’s transformative trip, tracking his progress not just geographically but also emotionally, the creator hinted.

Later on, Dong-hyuk clarified that all the messages he intended to convey through the Squid Game narrative would be fully expressed and concluded by the end of Season 3.

Speaking about the concept for Season 3’s conclusion, he admitted that the thought just seemed to arise organically, as if it were meant to be the final episode. He further expressed that with this finale behind us, there wouldn’t be a need for any more tales unfolding from that point onward.

In simple terms, it’s expected that Season 3 of Squid Game will be released around 2025. The creator, Dong-hyuk, has announced that he’s almost finished with the editing process.
