The anticipation for Black Ops 6 has been palpable, but the initial reactions from pros have been a rollercoaster ride. The lack of balance between ARs and SMGs, coupled with the less-than-impressive map offerings, has left many feeling underwhelmed, to put it mildly – it’s like we’ve been transported back to the dog days of Black Ops 3!
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been following the struggles of Call of Duty League pros in figuring out the map and weapon setup for Black Ops Cold War. The latest update has definitely made their task less daunting and more manageable.
Fans don’t expect the 2025 CDL season to start until around December. In the meantime, organizations have already begun hosting scrimmage matches against each other and participating in pre-season tournaments, like FaZe Zooma’s $100,000 event.
It seems that initial evaluations regarding the current competitive landscape are showing some inconsistencies. Professional players are struggling to achieve a fair equilibrium between Assault Rifles (ARs) and Submachine Guns (SMGs), resulting in the prohibition of the Model L and XM4 weapons.
As a fellow enthusiast, I can’t help but echo the sentiment shared by both fans and players. We’re all feeling quite displeased with the map selections, a sentiment that OpTic Gaming’s Dashy and Shotzzy have expressed as “duds” for best-of-six series (BO6).
Thankfully, the Nov. 4 update addresses a few of those concerns.
Primarily, the update reduces the effectiveness of a technique known as ‘snaking’, where players quickly transition between lying flat and squatting behind cover.
In many games, the ability to “snake” (move sideways while prone) is seen as too powerful because it lets players quickly pop up above an obstacle to gather information or engage in a firefight without facing retaliation. Interestingly, professional players in Modern Warfare 3 agreed among themselves to avoid this tactic, but Treyarch already implemented restrictions on it in Black Ops 6.
This revision modifies the cooling period for stance shift transitions to make it less advantageous to repeatedly transition between lying prone and standing upright. In simpler terms, the developers are suggesting a limit to the frequent use of this tactic, often referred to as “evading” or “snaking.
Instead, the duration of Flashbang grenades was reduced by 20% to avoid potential bans.
Regarding weapon adjustments, Treyarch has decreased the effective damage ranges for weapons and reduced headshot multipliers, but boosted SMGs for better performance in medium-range battles. This change might make it simpler for SMG specialists to hold their own against assault rifles in competitive play.
To resolve the map problem, it was disclosed by the development team that Season 1 will feature the introduction of three fresh maps upon release, with additional ones added throughout the season.
