Cathy Tyson and Stephen Fry Join Female-Led Folk Horror ‘Black Samphire’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned cinema enthusiast with a keen eye for unique storytelling and a deep appreciation for the genre-bending potential of folk horror, I can’t help but be enthralled by the announcement of “Black Samphire.” The combination of Cathy Tyson, Stephen Fry, and an intriguing narrative that delves into the toxicity of relationships and water pollution is a recipe for a truly captivating cinematic experience.

Cathy Tyson (“Criminal Record”) and Stephen Fry (“The Dropout”) are set to star in the forthcoming folk-horror film titled “Black Samphire.

They will star alongside Cathy Wippell and Ishtar Currie-Wilson, who play couple Mari and Isla.

I’m excited to share that I’m part of a chilling horror production, focusing on a toxic queer relationship and the ominous theme of water pollution. This compelling project is being helmed by the talented director Cat White, from a thought-provoking script penned by Wippell. We’re now in the pre-production phase, gearing up for our cameras to roll early in 2025. More details on casting will be revealed as we move forward. Stay tuned!

Following Isla consuming a toxic plant due to contaminated water, Mari observes shocking transformations in her companion, uncovering a grim reality about the village and their bond.

White is recognized for “Fifty-Four Days” and the forthcoming film “To My Daughter,” featuring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and produced by Lupus Films.

White stated, “‘Black Samphire’ serves as a powerful reminder to each one of us about the far-reaching consequences of our decisions – or our inaction. Water, being both a giver and taker of life, plays a significant role in the symbolism, illustrating how our actions can circle back to affect future generations.” Through the troubled bond between Mari and Isla, we are compelled to ponder: what does it mean when something as essential as water becomes harmful for us?

The production titled ‘Black Samphire’ is a collaborative effort between Silicon Gothic and Candid Broads Productions. This company is spearheaded by its CEO and founder, Oriane Pick, as well as Anais Ferrato in the role of an associate producer.

Joseph Archer, co-founder of Silicon Gothic, shared that our first movie aligns with our company’s principles and aims to revamp the folk horror genre. This is done by weaving a warning story within the backdrop of the U.K.’s water contamination issue. We’re thrilled to collaborate with such a gifted group of actors and filmmakers to achieve these goals,” said Joseph Archer, co-founder of Silicon Gothic.

Pick added: “Candid Broads has been eagerly searching for a female-centric horror, and ‘Black Samphire’ immediately captured our attention. With its unique and captivating storytelling, this film promises to grip the audience’s hearts while addressing the critical issue of water contamination in our society today. We are absolutely thrilled to team up with Silicon Gothic and support Cat White in her directorial debut!”

The executive producers are Tom Miller, who worked on “The Phantom of the Open”, James Murray from “The Crown”, the CEO of River Action U.K., James Wallace, and renowned personality Stephen Fry.
