As a seasoned gamer of TV shows, I can’t help but empathize with Jerry Seinfeld‘s remorse over the ending of his iconic sitcom. Like him, I too have often found myself grappling with the aftermath of decisions made during games, wishing for a redo or an alternate path. The finale of Seinfeld, with its unconventional twist, was indeed a bold move that left many fans scratching their heads.
Television series finales are often tricky, as it’s hard to please everyone with them. Typically, those who are most unsatisfied tend to be the creators themselves, since they put so much effort into their productions. However, in the case of Seinfeld, things are different. One of the show’s creators still feels that the unconventional ending, where the characters had to deal with the repercussions of their actions, didn’t align with the TV show’s original premise, which was intended to be about nothing in particular.
On the Q with Tom Power’s show, Jerry Seinfeld admitted his preference for concluding the television series by allowing the characters to be released from prison.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reflect on the situation and feel that perhaps we erred by keeping them imprisoned. In hindsight, it seems unnecessary.
On another occasion, Seinfeld expressed his regret about concluding the 1989 success, echoing similar sentiments during the New Yorker festival, as reported by Vulture.
Occasionally, I ponder whether we might’ve been better off not going through with it. We were under immense stress then, pushed towards organizing one grand finale performance, yet in the realm of comedy, ‘big’ often leads to disasters.
Instead of following a different path from Jerry Seinfeld’s finale for the sitcom ‘Seinfeld’, Larry David, one of its creators, showed indifference towards the public response to the finale. Unlike Jerry Seinfeld, he demonstrated no desire to revise how they concluded the story they co-created.
Independent of opinions about the final episode, there’s widespread agreement that Seinfeld, overall, was a thriving sitcom with a strong following among fans.
