‘A Journey’ Sequel, ‘Moonlit Reunion’ in the Works as China’s Linmon Media Expands Slate of Costume Drama Series

As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for international cinema, I must say that Linmon Media‘s commitment to the costume drama series genre is truly captivating. Having traversed the vast landscapes of cinematic history, I can confidently say that their upcoming slate promises an enchanting journey through time and culture.

Linmon Media, a mainland Chinese film and television production company, announces an increase in their dedication towards producing costume drama series.

This week at TIFFCOM, the film and television rights market that runs concurrently with the Tokyo International Film Festival, provided information about four upcoming costume drama series and additional modern shows. These productions are scheduled to air between now and mid-2026.

Top executives were present in Tokyo for the global debut of “The Unseen Sister,” a mystery drama movie directed by Midi Z, which was screened at the main competition of the Tokyo International Film Festival. The film made its box office premiere in China on Saturday and has garnered $15.7 million within its first week of release.

I’m thrilled to share that one of the most anticipated series, “Moonlit Reunion,” is almost ready for release! This enchanting romantic-fantasy drama takes place in the vibrant city of Chang An during the Tang Dynasty era, featuring the talented actors Xu Kai and Tian Xiwei. In China, it will be available on Tencent Video, while Linmon holds the rights for international territories. The series is expected to grace our screens with a total of 40 episodes in the second quarter of 2025! Can’t wait to immerse myself in this magical tale!

After that, we’ll delve into “A Dream Within a Dream,” a blend of comedy and romance, filled with costumes. The plot unfolds as a time-traveling tale, where a struggling actress steps into a fictional world from a screenplay and attempts to evade the predetermined fate that awaits her in this alternate reality.

The romantic drama titled “Under the Moonlight” is set to conclude filming by spring 2025. The narrative revolves around a struggling princess and an elderly emperor, who find themselves in a practical union due to circumstances. As of now, details regarding main cast and crew remain undisclosed.

In early 2026, we can expect the premiere of “A Journey to Glow,” the follow-up to our popular 2023-24 production “A Journey to Love.” This costume drama centers around two assassins from competing agencies and was a hit on iQiyi within China, as well as on Viu and iQiyi in international markets.

In the modern vernacular, during TIFFCOM, Linmon unveiled “Under the Skin 2,” an alluring and slightly surreal series that follows a detective in the police force and an artist skilled in portraiture who have extraordinary perceptions. Lead actors Tan Jianci and Jin Shijia will bring this production to life starting from December.

It was clarified that Chinese historical dramas, originally in the language, continue to be highly sought after and are drawing more sales and viewers from various international regions, with this trend expanding.

The increasing global popularity of Chinese dramas, along with Linmon’s practice of keeping international rights, allows them to re-release some of their older shows on the market through Linmon International.

Our company is currently producing more costume drama series than ever before,” the representative stated during the Tokyo presentation.

Previously, the company stated that it invests approximately RMB4-6 million ($560,000 – $840,000) per episode for its shows to ensure high-quality visuals. They likened their “Journey” series to HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” although with distinct Chinese cultural aspects and potentially more episodes – up to 40, which is the maximum allowed according to regulations established three years ago.
