What’s the Game of Thrones movie about?

As a die-hard fan who’s spent countless hours poring over the intricate tapestry of George R.R. Martin’s masterpiece, I wholeheartedly agree that these ideas could breathe new life into the Game of Thrones universe.

You don’t have to be a maester to know it’s a great time to be a Game of Thrones fan.

We’ve recently concluded House of the Dragon Season 2 (which was excellent, despite any contradictory opinions), and soon, we’ll witness the television tales of Dunk and Egg in Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. However, even more intriguing projects are on the horizon.

On Halloween 2024, word arrived like black-winged messengers that a Game of Thrones film is being crafted. Alas, we’re about as clueless regarding its storyline as Jon Snow is on his best days of keeping secrets. Yet, with our deep knowledge of Targaryen dynasty and the rich tapestry of Westeros spun by George RR Martin, we can’t resist taking some wild stabs in the dark. After all, even a maester at The Citadel might be left scratching his head when it comes to predicting what happens next in this intricate tale!

We’ve brainstormed and identified five compelling storylines that we believe could make exceptional films set within the world of Game of Thrones!

Doom of Valyria

What’s the Game of Thrones movie about?

Are you curious about an exciting TV series concept? Watching the Dragon Lords face destruction could make for quite a spectacle! In reality, though, it’s well-known that the Targaryens seized control of Westeros following their departure from Valyria. However, what many may not realize is why the House of Fire and Blood chose to abandon their ancestral home. Essentially, a Targaryen dragon dreamer had a vision predicting a massive disaster that would wipe out Valyria, causing them to seek refuge on Dragonstone.

In simpler terms, this cataclysmic incident is referred to as the Downfall of Valyria, an event that annihilated the Valyrian Freehold, along with most dragons and their keepers. This significant occurrence remains veiled in legend and mystery, with its origins still unknown. However, it would certainly be intriguing if we could unravel the secrets behind this catastrophe in a show, wouldn’t it?

Aegon’s Conquest

What’s the Game of Thrones movie about?

It’s been made known that George RR Martin and writer Mattson Tomlin are collaborating on an adaptation of Aegon’s Conquest. Initially, Tomlin proposed this would be a television series, but given that HBO has greenlit the pilot, it might have evolved into a feature-length film instead.

Frankly speaking, I believe this method could work well for portraying Aegon’s conquest of Westeros. Though the skill of the Game of Thrones producers in creating such impressive content on a TV budget has always left me amazed, the magnitude of The Conquest implies either a significant financial investment or certain narrative sacrifices. Personally, I prefer seeing key events like the Fields of Fire and legendary creatures like Balerion executed flawlessly rather than being rushed due to budget constraints.

Also – and I might get sent to The Wall for this – but there’s not actually that much story to the Targaryen takeover of Westeros. Aegon and his Sister Wives basically fly over, kick everyone’s ass (Dorne remains unbowed, unbent, unbroken, of course), and declare themselves royalty. That’s sort of it. The intrigue and politicking (that makes Thrones so fun to watch) come after Aegon and Balerion have turned Westeros into a fiery ruin. So maybe this story would work better as a feature-length film, and then we can do a spin-off series telling us more about Aegon’s reign.

The Long Night

What’s the Game of Thrones movie about?

One intriguing historical occurrence in the realm of Westeros is known as the Long Night. This catastrophic event transpired many millennia prior to the Targaryen conquest, marking the initial invasion of the White Walkers from beyond the Northern borders. Initially dismissed as folklore during our introduction to Westeros, Jon Snow and the Night’s Watch discover that this devastating war was anything but a bedtime story spun by Old Nan.

Game of Thrones fans have long been captivated by the White Walkers (perhaps this is why House of the Dragon has made an effort to incorporate them), as they represent a mysterious antagonist. Their origins, motives, and the extent of their conquest attempts have intrigued viewers since they first witnessed their striking blue eyes. A series centered around The Long Night would provide additional knowledge about the First Men, the Children of the Forest, and even the influential figures who established the noble houses of Westeros.

Jon Snow

A while back, Kit Harington and another collaborator were preparing a Game of Thrones spin-off centered around Jon Snow as the new King Beyond the Wall. Regrettably, in April 2024, it was disclosed that this project had ceased production. Nevertheless, even though an entire series might not materialize, fans can still anticipate Jon Snow’s reign on the big screen.

Revisiting the primary timeline of Game of Thrones following the poor response to Season 8 might appear unwise at first glance, but a series centered around Jon Snow could potentially restore the show’s reputation and provide long-time fans with resolution on questions left hanging for years, such as how Westeros responded to the Starks’ taking power or where Drogon ended up.

Planetos is a big old place

What’s the Game of Thrones movie about?

From a devoted fan’s perspective, delving into George RR Martin’s grand universe (Planetos) feels like just scratching the surface when it comes to the realm of Westeros. While we’ve caught glimpses of Essos’ western coastline, there’s so much more to this vast continent beyond the Free Cities and Slaver’s Bay. The idea of a film unfolding in Assahi, a city shrouded in mystery where sorcery, particularly its darker aspects, is openly practiced, or delving into the rich history of the Dothraki, is tantalizingly intriguing. The possibilities for exploration and adventure are truly boundless.

Beyond Essos and Westeros lies another continent: Sothoryos. It’s a challenging terrain, filled with dense jungles, fearsome creatures, and enigmatic inhabitants. Imagine an exhilarating Indiana Jones-esque film unfolding amidst its shores, captivating audiences everywhere. Alternatively, if you prefer a familiar setting, join Arya on her quest to uncover the mysteries of the Western lands of Westeros. We all know there’s something hidden out there – wouldn’t it be thrilling to discover what?
