As a long-time fan of Marvel and its intricate storylines, I must say that the finale of Agatha All Along left me with more questions than answers, especially regarding Nicholas Scratch’s father.
In the final episode of Agatha All Along, we learned about the fate of Nicholas Scratch; however, a significant question remains unresolved – who was his biological father?
In the series WandaVision, Agatha Harkness initially appeared as a villain. However, by the conclusion of Agatha All Along, she shifted roles and became more of an anti-hero. Joining forces with Billy, who is also known as Wiccan, from the spirit world, she aided in the search for his missing sibling Tommy.
That’s not to say she’s totally redeemed. For centuries, she gleefully murdered covens of witches, luring them into singing the Witches’ Road ballad – and when it didn’t work (it never did), they’d attack her, and she’d drain their power.
Nevertheless, the final scene reveals her transformation into a cold and heartless person, which is connected to Nicholas Scratch.
What happened to Nicholas Scratch?
Nicholas Scratch died in his sleep, taken away by Death in the middle of the night.
In the year 1750, Episode 9 begins by showing Agatha frantically making her way through a forest while heavily pregnant. Suddenly, Rio, also known as Death or the Original Green Witch, materializes, suggesting that the unborn child within her has passed away.
She pleads for his life, vowing eternal hatred towards Rio if they separate her from her child. She grants him a prolonged period with Nicholas Scratch, enabling him to mature and savor his youth.
However, his birth already violated the “natural balance”, and years later, his time runs out. As Agatha sleeps, Death shows up to claim Nicholas. He isn’t frightened – he simply gets up, gives his mom a kiss on the cheek, and walks away, leaving his corpse behind.
So, who’s Nicholas Scratch’s father?
While the exact identity of Nicholas Scratch’s father remains unverified, several intriguing suggestions have emerged.
1st Option: Similar to how Wanda brought Tommy and Billy into existence through her magical abilities, it’s possible that Nicholas was the result of an “unplanned manifestation” – in simpler terms, Agatha conceived herself without needing a biological partner, relying solely on her powers.
In contrast, the final scene presents a complex aspect: Agatha claims that no magical spells or incantations were used during Nicholas’ creation, implying a natural birth process instead of magic.
2: In the series, Rio is not literally Nicholas’ dad, but rather Death’s manifestation. Since Death isn’t a person but a symbol of death, it could be possible that early in their relationship, Death was capable of impregnating Agatha, given that non-human entities don’t have genders.
“Perhaps this is the reason Death comes for Nicholas – life emerging from death is an unusual paradox in the cosmos. Agatha protests, ‘It can’t be,’ but I reply, ‘It has to be.’
Another point to keep in mind: Rio was not only associated with death, but she was also known as the Green Witch, which gave her the power to manipulate and command both nature and all life forms.
Thirdly: It’s Mephisto who is Nicholas’ biological father, a fact that might make you cringe given his reputation, but he did appear in ‘Agatha All Along’, and there are further hints suggesting this paternity.
Readers often note that “Old Scratch” is a common term for the Devil, given Marvel’s portrayal of him as Satan. As such, it’s possible that Nicholas’ name could provide insights into his family history.
