Is John Wick really dead? 5 big clues he’s still alive

As a die-hard fan of the John Wick franchise, I’ve been following this series since its inception and have to admit, the ending of Chapter 4 left me scratching my head. While it may seem that our beloved Baba Yaga has met his demise, I strongly believe there are compelling reasons to suggest otherwise.

As a die-hard John Wick fan, I’ve got to say, it was heartbreaking to see our favorite action hero seemingly meet his end at the close of the fourth film. But hey, I’m not so sure ol’ Baba Yaga kicked the bucket just yet! Here are some clues that make me think he’s still among the living:

Exactly ten years ago, John Wick made his impressive debut on movie screens with his combination of fisticuffs, gunplay, and martial arts, thereby establishing an exceptional action film series.

Not only has it become extremely profitable, but its success is evident through the box office earnings of the four John Wick films surpassing $1 billion globally, leading to spin-offs in both film and television.

As each subsequent movie earned more than its predecessor, it came as quite an unexpected twist when the main character met his end in Chapter 4. However, hints scattered throughout indicate that John may not have been completely exterminated.

We don’t see John Wick die

In the fourth installment of John Wick, John Wick gets hit repeatedly by gunfire while fighting Caine. Eventually, the wounded character falls down the steps leading to the Basilica of Sacré Coeur.

However, the character doesn’t appear to take his final breath on screen. Movie conventions suggest that if a protagonist’s death isn’t shown explicitly, there may be room for doubt about their ultimate fate.

In the subsequent scene, Winstone, known as the Bowery King, along with John’s loyal pit bull, are found near John’s grave. They appear to be solitary, and the grass is overgrown, implying that a significant amount of time has elapsed since his funeral. This implies that we haven’t witnessed John’s demise or burial in the narrative so far.

The Bowery King wonders aloud, “Where could he be?” To which Winston replies with a hint of mystery, “I suppose that’s anyone’s guess.” This leaves room for optimism in the situation.

The dog knows

In the course of our conversation, it seemed like John’s dog glanced towards something off to the side, as though he had noticed it. Simultaneously, his ears perked up and he emitted a sound that suggested excitement typical of dogs.

However, could it be a sense of familiarity? Might the nameless Pit Bull have identified a cherished companion? Could John possibly be observing his friends surreptitiously, hiding close to the burial site?

Canines have played a key role in all four JW movies, so if John is alive, a dog would know.

“Death” is the only escape

In the beginning of Chapter 4, John embarks on a journey to Morocco for a talk with The Elder regarding his destiny. However, the news is disheartening. He learns that “one cannot evade their own identity,” and “no one manages to escape from The Table.

In simpler terms, The Elder emphasizes that the only means for John Wick to attain freedom or tranquility, whether it’s now or in the future, is through his demise.

Could it be that the notion of faking his own death crossed Wick’s mind at this point, given John’s comment? Definitely plausible, since immediately after, Wick fires at The Elder, initiating a chain of events leading to the dramatic ending on the steps.

Wick survives in a deleted scene

During an interview with Empire magazine, director Chad Stahelski disclosed that he shot a different ending for Chapter 4, in which John Wick survives the final confrontation.

According to Stahelski, one alternative ending showed John Wick surviving at the end of the film. This closing made it evident that he was still living. However, when testing this with audiences, they strongly preferred the enigmatic finale instead.

As I pondered over potential storylines for a possible Chapter 5, I stumbled upon some intriguing gameplay footage that could serve as a foundation. If this sequel ever materializes, these clips could come in quite handy! Now, let’s dive back into the virtual world and see what adventures await.

Chapter 5 is inevitable

To celebrate John Wick’s 10th anniversary, Stahelski did a wide-ranging interview about the franchise with The Hollywood Reporter, in which the subject of Chapter 5 was raised.

The writer-director mentioned he has several thoughts on how John Wick’s story could be further developed, without diminishing the emotional impact of Chapter 4’s conclusion.

Is it possible that John Wick 5 will be made? Certainly, there is a chance, whether driven by financial reasons or creative inspiration,” said Stahelski. “In fact, over the past three years, I’ve come up with at least three to four different ideas for John Wick 5.

So expect John Wick to return sooner rather than later.

Currently, it has been announced that John Wick’s upcoming appearance will take place in a film set within the timeline between Chapters 3 and 4. Here’s what we currently know about the movie titled “Ballerina”.
