World Series Game 5 Scores 18.6 Million Viewers For Fox Sports as Dodgers Clinch the Title

As a lifelong cinephile and baseball enthusiast who has witnessed countless games and seasons unfold, I must say that this year’s World Series has been nothing short of a cinematic masterpiece. The tension, the drama, the twists, and the ultimate triumph of the Los Angeles Dodgers – it all reminds me of the climactic scenes in a classic Hollywood movie.

On Wednesday night, the fox (representing excitement) acted as if it were Freddie Freeman himself, as the Los Angeles Dodgers secured the World Series win in Game 5. As per Nielsen data reported by Fox Sports, approximately 18.6 million viewers watched the thrilling spectacle of the Dodgers overcoming an initial disadvantage to triumph over the New York Yankees with a score of 7-6.

The viewership for that game was primarily from audiences watching on Fox, Fox Deportes, and Fox Sports streaming platforms. On Fox alone, it attracted approximately 18.152 million viewers, along with a 4.25 rating and 46 share among adults aged 18-49, and a 5.27 rating/42 share with adults between the ages of 25 and 54. Fox clearly outperformed all other networks combined on that particular night, nearly tripling their collective total.

To sum up, the recent five-game World Series attracted an average of 15.81 million viewers, marking the highest viewership since the 2017 series between the Dodgers and the Houston Astros. (Clears throat.) In Los Angeles, Game 5 registered a 21.1 rating and a 55 share of viewers, while it was 14.8/39 in New York.

As reported by Fox Sports, the viewership for Game 5 of the World Series has been the highest since 2017, averaging approximately 18.96 million viewers. The peak viewership was recorded between 11:15 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. ET, with a total of 21.27 million viewers tuning in to Fox at that time.

It had already been a strong World Series for Fox, with the nation’s two largest markets in the game. The dream match-up of the Dodgers vs. the Yankees boosted overall interest in this year’s MLB championship round. And it repped quite a turnaround from 2023’s much lower numbers, when a Texas Rangers/Arizona Diamonbacks matchup failed to excite the larger population. (Game 5 was up 58% on Fox vs. the 2023 Game 5.)

As we approach Game 5 of the 2024 World Series, the tournament has had its strongest start since 2017, with an average viewership of 14.98 million people tuning in. The most-watched game so far was Game 4, a Yankees win, which attracted 16.7 million viewers across Fox, Fox Deportes, and Fox Sports streaming. This makes it the highest-rated Game 4 on Fox since 2016. Additionally, viewership for Game 4 increased by 92% compared to 2023’s Game 4 (8.5 million viewers).

The 2024 World Series kicked off triumphantly with Freeman’s walk-off grand slam securing the Dodgers their initial victory in Game 1. This game attracted a total of 15.2 million viewers when combined figures from Fox, Fox Deportes, Univision, and Fox Sports streaming are considered. Notably, it was the most watched opening game since 2017, with viewership up by 62% compared to last year’s Game 1.

The games that followed saw record-breaking viewership for the Dodgers, with Game 2 attracting 13.8 million viewers – the highest for a Game 2 since 2018 and a 65% increase over 2023. This trend continued in Game 3, where 13.6 million viewers tuned in – the most for a Game 3 since 2018 and a 63% surge compared to 2023.

The ongoing World Series is breaking records in terms of Spanish broadcasts. As per Fox Sports, Game 4 was watched by a staggering 419,000 viewers, making it the highest-viewed Game 4 ever on Spanish television for the World Series.

Freeman earned the MVP title during the World Series, marking the eighth World Series victory for the Dodgers as a team throughout their entire history. The Dodgers last triumphed in the 2020 season, which was shortened due to the pandemic and thus they couldn’t hold a celebration then. However, this time around, there are plans for a downtown Los Angeles parade on Friday, followed by a ticketed event at Dodger Stadium.
