As a long-time fan and follower of the Star Wars saga, I find the revelation about the original plan for Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s character in “The Phantom Menace” absolutely fascinating! If George Lucas had stuck to his initial idea, it would have been one of the most intriguing twists in the entire franchise. The thought of Liam Neeson’s Qui-Gon Jinn being the actual Obi-Wan Kenobi and taking on Alec Guinness’s name upon his master’s death is simply captivating.
Regardless of personal opinions, “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace” is widely admired for introducing Ewan McGregor as young Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, a surprising revelation from concept artist Iain McCaig’s recent interview with StarWars.com, on the occasion of “The Phantom Menace’s” 25th anniversary, suggests that George Lucas had planned an unexpected twist for the film. Originally, Liam Neeson was intended to play Obi-Wan Kenobi, implying that the character we know as Obi-Wan (played by McGregor) was actually a different Obi-Wan and the real Obi-Wan (Neeson’s character) perished.
McCaig mentioned that at one point, the elder Jedi was known as Obi-Wan and the younger one as Qui-Gon. In a touching moment, when Obi-Wan dies and Qui-Gon overpowers Darth Maul, he not only inherits his Master’s mission but also assumes his name. So, Qui-Gon is now known as Obi-Wan.
In the movie “A New Hope,” Alec Guinness initially appears with his hood up and says, “Obi-Wan? Now that’s a name I’ve not heard…”, as stated by McCaig. However, he was actually portraying Qui-Gon, not Obi-Wan at that moment; George Lucas later modified the character to be Obi-Wan in the final scenes.
In the original Star Wars films, McGregor portrayed a younger version of Alec Guinness’ Obi-Wan character, first introduced in 1977’s “Star Wars: A New Hope.” However, George Lucas initially planned to dramatically alter the origins of this character in “The Phantom Menace.” The idea was that the character would actually be Qui-Gon Jinn, adopting the name of his deceased Jedi mentor, which could have been one of the most significant reveals in Star Wars history. But Lucas decided to change direction before filming began.
In two “Star Wars” sequels released in 2002 (“Attack of the Clones”) and 2005 (“Revenge of the Sith”), Ewan McGregor reprised his role as Obi-Wan. More recently, he took on the lead role in the Disney+ series “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” which debuted 20 years after these films. In interviews, he’s expressed interest in a second season for the show, despite it originally being planned as a limited series.
McGregor expressed his strong desire for another fight, telling British GQ prior to its airing in 2022. He mentioned that if he could have a fight occasionally, it would bring him great joy.
