As a longtime gamer and fan of B-movie action, I’m genuinely excited about Paul W.S. Anderson’s latest venture into the world of video games. Having directed some of the most iconic zombie films in recent memory with the Resident Evil series, it’s no surprise that he’d find himself drawn back to the undead hordes of The House of the Dead.
Paul W.S. Anderson, known for his work on multiple Resident Evil films that cumulatively grossed over $1 billion and the less-than-well-received Monster Hunter film, is embarking on a new video game adaptation project. Specifically, Anderson is creating a movie based on Sega’s The House of the Dead series.
1997’s “The House of the Dead” is a setting that Anderson has visited often, given its theme revolves around an agent battling hordes of zombies. Interestingly, this film adapts from “The House of the Dead 3,” which was released in 2002.
Anderson told Deadline he’s always been a fan of the series, dating back to the arcade days.
He mentioned that he was among the first to participate, but now he has teenage children who join in as well. What truly appeals to him about this property, he explained, is that it bridges generations, offering an intergenerational intellectual property.
The tale focuses on Lisa Rogan, a woman embarking on a quest to rescue her dad. Concurrently, it delves into the life of Daniel Curien, the offspring of the man who initiated the zombie plague initially. As stated by Anderson, he must confront the “legacy of his father’s actions.
Anderson explained that his strategy is to encapsulate the essence of this intense, dynamic video game, as seen in Zack Snyder’s work by making those creatures swiftly moving. He referred to it as an exhilarating rollercoaster ride of fear.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say instead of the Resident Evil games with their traps and brainteasers, the House of the Dead movie by Anderson promises an immersive experience that throws you headfirst into the heart of the action, just like the game does.
As a dedicated enthusiast, I plan to create a film that immerses viewers directly into the action, unfolding in real-time just like the original concept. This movie won’t burden you with excessive backstory; it will be accessible to all, regardless of familiarity with House of the Dead. We’ll all share the same starting point.
Essentially, Anderson explained that his movie aspires to be an exhilarating 90-minute experience, promising to be the most intensely terrifying haunted house you’ve ever encountered.
The House of the Dead movie is still in its initial stages, with no announcements about the cast or release date as of now. Before delving into the Resident Evil and Monster Hunter franchises, Anderson had directed Mortal Kombat back in 1995. Interestingly, this isn’t the first House of the Dead film to be produced; that distinction goes to Uwe Boll, who released one in 2003.
The film adaptation of “The House of the Dead” is Anderson’s next venture, alongside the upcoming fantasy movie titled “In the Lost Lands,” both set for release in 2025. Notably, Anderson hasn’t released a movie since “Monster Hunter” in 2020, which was based on the Capcom game and garnered mixed reviews, earning just $42 million globally.
In just two days, another video game title, The House of the Dead, has joined the list of games with upcoming adaptations, coming after the announcement of a movie based on Outlast, which is now under development by horror film powerhouse Lionsgate.
