As a dedicated fan who has followed 100 Thieves since their humble beginnings, I must admit that this news leaves me with a mix of emotions. On one hand, it’s disheartening to see them part ways with League of Legends, a game that they have been so instrumental in shaping and growing. However, on the other hand, I find myself intrigued by their decision to stick around for one more year in the LTA format.
100 Thieves are considering leaving the League of Legends professional scene because they can’t afford to keep their team going, but Riot Games doesn’t want them to leave right away. Although 100T has already sold their franchise spot, they will continue for one more year in the LTA format on a temporary basis.
2024 saw some unusual outcomes for team 100T. While they managed to triumph over Cloud9 in an unforeseen win, securing their place at Worlds 2024 despite a mediocre season, their performance at the event was less than impressive. They were outperformed by teams from smaller regions and this showed that the LCS was primarily dominated by just two teams during the year.
Regardless, the squad opted to renew River’s contract and appears to be committed to nurturing and strengthening their existing pool of talent for a stronger showing in 2025. Yet, there seems to be some turbulence within the 100 Thieves organization.
Regrettably, the supporters of the team will not be part of the league next year, as they had previously sold their franchise spot back to Riot Games ahead of the LTA merger. Contrastingly, 100 Thieves have been given an additional year to remain in the league, even though their slot was already sold off by Riot.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got some inside scoop for you all. Recently, Riot Games announced that 100T is stepping away from League of Legends, but don’t jump to conclusions about their passion for the game. The decision was made for business reasons, nothing more.
Furthermore, Riot Games hasn’t decided on how they plan to utilize the vacated slot when 100T leaves at the end of 2025. Currently, Disguised has already secured a guest spot that they can protect by year-end, but it’s unclear if the second slot will continue as a guest slot after 100 Thieves departs.
It could be a good move for the league to keep it a guest slot considering interest from creators in creating tier 2 teams, and having that extra spot freed up could allow for more creator teams to find a path in.
Additionally, it’s possible that Riot might choose to offer the slot to another team for franchising, but it remains uncertain how much that slot is worth given that 100 Thieves have departed from the league.
