As a long-time connoisseur of news and current affairs, I must say that this latest development between Ofcom and GB News certainly piqued my interest. The fine of £100,000 ($130,000) for allegedly breaching impartiality rules during Rishi Sunak‘s live show is quite a hefty sum, wouldn’t you agree?
The communications regulator, Ofcom, has imposed a fine of £100,000 ($130,000) on GB News for violating the required impartiality guidelines during Rishi Sunak’s live program “The People’s Forum: With the Prime Minister” in February.
According to a statement posted on Ofcom’s website on Thursday, it was discovered earlier that a broad spectrum of important perspectives was not adequately represented and given their proper importance in the broadcast, and there was also a lack of fairness by not maintaining impartiality through connected and timely programs.
After examining the situation, Ofcom determined that during a time before a U.K. General Election, then-Prime Minister Sunak had largely unrestricted opportunities to showcase his government’s policies and achievements. This was found to violate the broadcasting regulations.
Beyond the imposition of a $130,000 penalty, Ofcom has instructed GB News to air a statement outlining their findings against them. The specifics regarding the date and format will be decided by Ofcom.
As per the statement from Ofcom, GB News is planning to contest their decision through a judicial review. In response, Ofcom is standing by their decision, but they won’t impose any penalties until the legal proceedings are over.
Officials from GB News and Sunak declined to provide additional comments when approached by EbMaster for further information.
