I truly admire Anna Kendrick for her selflessness and compassion. Her decision to donate all her earnings from “Woman of the Hour” to organizations like RAINN and the National Center for Victims of Violent Crime speaks volumes about her character. It’s not every day we encounter a Hollywood star who puts the needs of others before their own financial gain, especially when it comes to such a sensitive and important cause.
During a chat on the “Crime Junkie AF” podcast, I shared that I didn’t pocket a single penny from my directorial work on “Woman of the Hour.” Instead, I chose to contribute my earnings to two remarkable organizations – RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) and the National Center for Victims of Violent Crime. These charities are at the forefront of offering support to survivors of sexual abuse and violence in our nation.
Kendrick expressed that the venture wasn’t intended to generate profits for him. Eventually, Netflix purchased the film, but it was only a week before the Toronto International Film Festival premiere that he realized the movie might earn money. This realization made him question if he felt uncomfortable about this potential profit, and indeed, he did.
She went on to explain, “I’m not gaining any profit from the film. Instead, the earnings are directed towards RAINN and The National Center for Victims of Violent Crime. This seemed like the minimal effort I could put forth.
In her first foray into directing, Kendrick Lamar presents “Woman of the Hour,” a film that recounts the real-life story of Rodney Alcala, portrayed by Daniel Zovatto, who was a serial killer active during the late 1970s. Alcala, convicted for five murders, is believed to be responsible for over 120 deaths in total. The movie features several sequences where Alcala targets and slays young women. Kendrick Lamar takes on the role of Sheryl Bradshaw, a contestant on “The Dating Game” during this chilling period.
Due to the nature of the movie’s theme, Kendrick found it uncomfortable to profit from it and chose instead to give her earnings to charities focusing on preventing sexual assault. It has been verified that EbMaster confirmed Kendrick donated every cent she earned in her roles as director, actress, and executive producer for the film.
In response to EbMaster, the National Center for Victims of Crime and its CEO Renée Williams expressed their excitement over receiving Anna’s generous donation, not only towards their own organization but also to their partners at RAINN. They were equally humbled by Anna’s show of support.
In an environment where the true crime genre frequently exaggerates sorrow, Anna’s work in ‘Woman of the Hour’ shines as a symbol of empathy and guidance. The organization emphasized that by championing a victim-focused perspective, she is instrumental in altering narratives that place emphasis on the respect due to those impacted by crime. Her dedication to amplifying survivor voices serves as a reminder that beneath every statistic and true crime tale lies a person with an inspiring narrative to share. Anna’s efforts underscore the idea that we can confront harsh realities while upholding the experiences of victims and survivors. It’s about fostering a community that listens, acknowledges, and strengthens those who have endured unthinkable suffering.
In a recent conversation with EbMaster, I shared that every scene in the film seems like a mirror of my own fear.
She mentioned that it didn’t seem coincidental to her that she reacted to the script at a moment when she had recently experienced something extremely painful and life-altering, which significantly shifted her perspective, drawing on her personal encounters with emotional abuse.
