As a long-time admirer of Jon Stewart and his unparalleled wit, I find myself consistently impressed by his ability to cut through the noise and focus on the issues that truly matter. His decades-long experience in satire has given him a unique perspective, one that allows him to see beyond the superficial and into the heart of the matter.
As a cinephile counting down the days till the election, I find myself hoping that the media would keep their focus firmly on candidate Donald Trump, rather than getting distracted by the less-than-stellar humor from his Madison Square Garden rally.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Stewart remarked, “The media seems fixated on Trump’s inappropriate humor. Instead, they should be focusing on Trump, who holds immense power. They should be highlighting his statement about planning to expel people using the same law we used for Japanese internment.
On Monday night, I tuned into “The Daily Show” where Stewart delved into the heated debate surrounding comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s stand-up performance at a Trump rally. During his act, Hinchcliffe endorsed Trump and made an inappropriate joke about Puerto Rico being “a floating pile of trash.” This comment sparked a flurry of criticism in the media and led several prominent Puerto Rican artists to publicly back Kamala Harris. In response, Trump’s campaign distanced itself from Hinchcliffe’s remark.
It’s clear now that inviting a satirist to a political rally, who then mocks a crucial voting group, was likely not the smartest move politically speaking. However, it’s important to note that he was simply doing his job. Stewart made this comment on “The Daily Show,” followed by showing some of Hinchcliffe’s jokes from Netflix’s “Roast of Tom Brady.
Stewart chuckled at the videos and remarked, “Oh, absolutely awful, but oh so hilarious! It seems there’s a flaw in my humor sensor. That man cracks me up. I apologize, I’m at a loss for words.
However, a significant portion of Stewart’s “Daily Show” segment focused on remarks made by Trump himself, particularly his immigration policies. He explained to Vanity Fair that he chose to emphasize the immigration issue because, according to Trump, it forms a fundamental aspect of his campaign – highlighting migrants as the root cause of our current societal problems.
Instead of focusing on a feasible yet uncomplicated plan for reforming the immigration system, they’ve opted for a different strategy, which is: “I’ll select a group of individuals whose numbers are unknown to me and compel them to depart.” (Stewart)
He commented, “Instead of adopting a firm-handed method, such as sitting down and getting to work, this is how he operates: Construct a barrier. … Expel everyone. Now, let’s consider the implications. Essentially, it would resemble stop-and-frisk for all of America. And it’s alarming. There should be a means to preserve our nation’s integrity while still respecting human dignity. Yet, there appears to be no effort to strike this balance because that’s not effective populism.
