As a seasoned gamer with decades of strategy-game expertise under my belt, I can confidently say that the return of Xerxes and the introduction of Persia in Civilization 7 has me more than excited. Having played Civ since its inception, I’ve seen leaders come and go, but Xerxes is a legendary figure whose absence was sorely missed.
With every passing week, we’re unveiling more parts of the puzzle that is Civilization 7. We’ve barely touched the surface, with much more to come for future epochs. However, the latest sneak peek has reintroduced a character who hasn’t been seen since Civilization 3 was launched in 2001 – Xerxes is back! In Civilization 7, you’ll have the opportunity to select Persia and leverage the legendary Persian Immortals. Below, you can compare Xerxes from Civ 3 with his upgraded version in Civ 7, along with details on each character’s unique strengths.
Two Xerxes Personas and Persia Confirmed for Civ 7
Each Civ 7 leader may not offer multiple character options, but we now understand that Xerxes will be one of the leaders who present distinct strategic routes. The persona of King of Kings, which resembles Xerxes (on the left in the image), emphasizes military strength, while The Achaemenid (on the right) leans towards a more peaceful approach, focusing on generating culture and wealth.
In addition to this update, it has been verified that Persia is among the various civilizations available for players to select during the Antiquity Era in Civilization 7. Since Civilization 7 no longer ties leaders to civilizations, players now have the freedom to determine if the advantages of Persia align with their preferred gameplay style or if another civilization would be more suitable for them.
If you’re aiming to showcase your military prowess, pairing Persia with Xerxes, the King of Kings, could be a strategic choice. Persia offers an enhancement to the combat strength of its infantry units, provides a formidable unique commander unit that enables other units to move following deployment, and reintroduces the legendary Persian Immortal as a healing infantry unit, capable of recuperating after defeating each enemy.
For individuals adopting the “King of Kings” persona, their military units will experience an enhancement in combat power when engaging in conflicts on neutral or hostile territories. On the other hand, the “Achaemenid” persona offers a distinct advantage by expanding your trade route limit and providing cultural enrichment through trade activities.
In the main game, you’ll find Xerxes as the King of Kings character. However, the Achaemenid persona will be an extra feature included in the Deluxe Content Pack DLC. If you decide to go for the Deluxe or Founders Edition of Civilization 7, you’ll receive this DLC automatically. For those who opt for the Standard Edition only, they’ll need to make a separate purchase to include the Achaemenid persona in their game.
In the exploration of Civilization 7, Xerxes’ civilization can naturally progress towards the Abbasid or Mongolian civilizations as he advances into the Exploration Era. However, players have the freedom to create unique paths for Xerxes, such as leading the Normans or Chola India. So far, details about the Exploration Age have been limited, but a livestream on November 7 will delve deeper into the gameplay, features, and introduce another leader.
