Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Monaghan Returning for ‘The Family Plan’ Sequel at Apple Original Films

As a seasoned critic who’s seen more action-comedies than I care to remember, I must confess that my cynicism was piqued when “The Family Plan” was first announced. However, the unexpected success it enjoyed with audiences has left me scratching my head in bewilderment and intrigue.

Mark Wahlberg is set to revive his role as a former government assassin now living as a suburban father once more, featuring in the follow-up to “The Family Plan” titled “Family Plan 2”.

Apple Original Films has revealed that a sequel is being made, with Wahlberg taking on both producing duties and starring in the film. Similarly, Michelle Monaghan, Zoe Colletti, and Van Crosby will rejoin the cast to portray their respective characters within the Morgan family. Notably, Simon Cellan Jones, who directed the original action-comedy, is set to come back for this installment as well.

Despite predominantly negative reviews towards “The Family Plan,” it seems to have resonated with viewers. In an overly excited statement lacking concrete figures, Apple announced that the film was their most-watched movie on Apple TV+ ever. However, this title was later challenged by the action-comedy “Wolves” starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, which Apple, using similar vague language, claimed had since become their most-watched movie on Apple TV+. Will “The Family Plan 2” dethrone it?

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Skydance Media is set to bring us the sequel of “The Family Plan.” David Coggeshall, who masterfully crafted the original script, will once again weave his magic for this upcoming installment. The story unfolds during the festive season in Europe, where our beloved family’s idyllic vacation turns into a whirlwind when Mark Wahlberg’s character’s past unexpectedly resurfaces, casting a dark shadow over their holiday cheer. Can’t wait to see how they navigate these new challenges as a unit!

Wahlberg is absolutely thrilled to slip back into the role of Dan Morgan once more, joining my outstanding fellow actors, and with Simon and David rejoining us,” he said in a statement. “Working on ‘The Family Plan,’ and witnessing it quickly capture the hearts of worldwide audiences as it did, has been immensely gratifying. We can hardly wait to team up with Apple and Skydance once more to craft the next chapter for the Morgan family, as their European vacation undoubtedly takes an unexpected turn.

David Ellison (on track to become the head of Paramount Global) will collaborate with Dana Goldberg and Don Granger to produce the movie for Skydance Media. Additionally, Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson, through Municipal Pictures, will also be involved in its production. John G. Scotti and Cellan Jones will serve as executive producers for the film.
