As a long-time Marvel enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of these iconic characters since the early days of Iron Man in 2008, hearing about the Russo Brothers and Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is nothing short of exhilarating! The trio’s collaboration on “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame” created a cinematic experience that left fans breathless, so I can only imagine what they have in store for us with “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.
At MCM Comic Con 2024, Joe Russo disclosed to GamesRadar+ that Marvel had proposed another “Avengers” film, following the success of “Avengers: Infinity War,” to the Russo Brothers and Robert Downey Jr., who were already in talks about a different project. It was at Comic-Con in July that it became public knowledge that Anthony and Joe Russo are directing two upcoming Marvel movies titled “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” In the former, Downey will make his debut as Doctor Doom within the MCU.
Joe mentioned, “We’ve been quite tight-knit,” referring to the bond between him and Downey. “Prior to Marvel coming on board, we were already collaborating on another venture, which is why we’re now working together with Robert. A narrative emerged from our discussions with Marvel that truly sparked our interest. It’s essential for us that it’s always about the story.
Joe mentioned that it wouldn’t make sense to return if the story didn’t have the potential to rival ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame.’ He suggested that there must be something exceptionally powerful or intriguing about the idea to justify such a comparison.
As a die-hard Marvel fan and cinephile, I’ve gotta say, it’s been the Russo Brothers who’ve steered some of my favorite Superhero journeys on the big screen! They’ve masterfully directed four epic Marvel films – not just the Avengers duology, but also “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” from 2014 and “Captain America: Civil War” in 2016.
The comeback of Downey in Marvel was more surprising than that of the Russo Brothers. Although Downey hinted earlier that he might rejoin Marvel, many assumed it would be a revival of Iron Man/Tony Stark. However, since Tony Stark died at the end of “Endgame,” and the MCU is delving into the multiverse, it wasn’t unexpected for Downey to portray another version of his iconic superhero. Contrary to these expectations, it has been revealed that he will be playing Doctor Doom instead.
2008 marked Robert Downey Jr.’s debut as the suave super-genius Tony Stark in “Iron Man,” the initial film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Over the subsequent 11 years, he would revisit this role in a total of 10 Marvel productions, such as “Iron Man 2,” “Iron Man 3,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “The Avengers,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.
Last December, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige made clear to Vanity Fair that he had no intention of altering Robert Downey Jr.’s emotional departure as Tony Stark. This hinted strongly to fans that if Downey were to rejoin the MCU, it would likely be as a different character.
Feige stated earlier that we’re going to preserve that significant moment without revisiting it. After years of dedicated work, we’ve reached that pivotal point, and we have no intention of altering or reversing it in any fashion.
As a die-hard Marvel enthusiast, I’m thrilled by the prospect that the storyline for Downey’s Doctor Doom could potentially match the intensity and drama of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” according to Joe Russo.
