Ansel Elgort to Star in Survival Thriller ‘Faster Than Horses’; Upgrade Launches Sales at AFM

As a seasoned cinema enthusiast who has traversed the silver screen landscapes of countless films, I am positively electrified by the announcement of “Faster Than Horses.” With Ansel Elgort, a versatile actor known for his gripping performances in films such as “West Side Story,” “Baby Driver,” and “The Fault in Our Stars,” taking on the lead role, this survival thriller promises to be nothing short of riveting.

Actor Ansel Elgort from “West Side Story” is all set to appear in the survival-thriller movie titled “Faster Than Horses.” This film is directed by Emmy nominee James Erskine, known for his work on “Shooting for Socrates,” and produced by renowned survival expert Bear Grylls.

Drawing inspiration from real events as detailed by Hampton Sides in his article, “Faster Than Horses” narrates the journey of a former Olympic runner seeking to regain past triumphs by participating in the ultra-tough Marathon des Sables, a sequence of consecutive marathons set within the vast Sahara Desert. However, when a fierce sandstorm strikes the race, our protagonist becomes disoriented and must spend an arduous 10 days fighting not for victory, but to stay alive amidst the unforgiving Saharan landscape.

The movie is being prepared for release ahead of time, and it’s set to be presented to global distributors at the American Film Market (AFM) starting on November 5th in Las Vegas. Upgrade will manage international sales, while CAA Media Finance will handle North American distribution rights.

The screenplay for “Faster Than Horses” was written by Michael Mul (known as “Astral”), Chris Mul (“Astral”), and Erskine. Grylls is producing the project through his studio, The Natural Studios, in collaboration with Delbert Shoopman, a multiple Emmy Award-winner, Ben Grass, Michael Pugliese from Running Tiger Films, and Stuart Sutherland of Celtic Arabia. Jonathan Kier and Matt Brodlie from Upgrade will act as executive producers.

Ever since I first learned this tale, it’s captivated me, and I’m overjoyed to finally be turning it into a film,” said Erskine, who previously directed the acclaimed comedy “Shooting for Socrates” in 2015 and will see his newest production, “The Flight of Bryan,” debut on U.K. screens in November.

Speaking with confidence, Erskine expressed that Ansel is certain to deliver an exceptional performance, captivatingly narrating the tale of a man’s resilience amidst overwhelming adversity, a compelling narrative of struggle and renewal backdropped by some of the earth’s most breathtaking scenery. Erskine’s portfolio encompasses documentaries such as “Sachin: A Billion Dreams,” “Copa 71,” “Billie,” and the Netflix productions “Skandal” and “Pantani: The Accidental Death of a Cyclist.

Ansel Elgort has garnered significant praise for his performances in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” and Edgar Wright’s “Baby Driver.” He was also a key player in Fox 2000’s box office sensation, “The Fault in Our Stars,” which brought him several awards at the Teen Choice Awards and other events. Lately, Elgort has been seen in JT Rogers’ HBO Max series, “Tokyo Vice,” where he not only starred but also served as an executive producer.

Grylls expressed his long-standing familiarity with this tale and his immense enthusiasm to be involved in the project that will breathe life into it. He spoke about the fulfilling experience of collaborating with Ansel, helping him grasp the role, and enhancing his performance’s authenticity. Grylls further mentioned that Ansel’s portrayal of a man battling against insurmountable odds to survive, both physically and emotionally, will captivate viewers.

Elgort is handled by three agencies: Creative Artists Agency (CAA), Brookside Artist Management, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes, Krintzman, Rubenstein, Kohner, Endlich, Goodell & Gellman. Delbert Shoopman, Bear Grylls, and James are all associated with CAA. Meanwhile, James is also represented by Curtis Brown.
