Teenage girl dies after trying viral subway surfing challenge

As a seasoned gamer and a concerned citizen, this news about the tragic deaths of two teenagers due to the reckless subway surfing trend on TikTok leaves me utterly disheartened. I remember my youth, filled with excitement, curiosity, and the pursuit of thrills, but never at the cost of life or limb.

As a devoted admirer putting this into my own words, here’s how I’d express it:

13-year-old Krystel Romero tragically passed away on October 27, 2024, during her participation in the popular subway surfing challenge trending on social media.

I’ve got to admit, riding atop speeding trains – or as they call it, subway surfing – has really taken off these days, capturing the hearts (and adrenaline rushes) of thrill-seekers everywhere. The daredevils among us even try to leap from one moving train to another!

A teenage girl was sitting on the roof of a southbound 7 train in Queens, New York when she lost her balance and slipped between the cars. Unfortunately, she was then struck by a moving train around 11 PM at the 111th Street station in Corona, ultimately resulting in her being run over.

At the scene, it was declared that Romero had passed away. Yet, she didn’t perform the popular stunt alone; as per the NYPD, a teenage companion was also participating in the daring act with her.

Initially, two teenagers tumbled off the train when it suddenly came to a halt, causing them to lose their balance. Tragically, one of the teens did not survive and was immediately transported to Elmhurst Hospital. The other teenager miraculously lived through the ordeal but was reported in critical condition by authorities. She suffered a fractured skull, internal brain bleeding, and was unable to breathe independently following the fall.

In the bustling New York City, where countless trains arrive and depart, it’s more likely that subway surfing persists. Yet, the Head of the NYPD Transit Bureau, Joseph Gulotta, has shared that the city is adopting drone technology to address this problem.

Our drone operation primarily operates along the J and 7 lines, as stated by Gulotta. To increase awareness, we’re aggressively using social media platforms. We’re sharing videos featuring parents and demonstrating the impact this has.

In the aftermath of a tragic teen’s passing, Mayor Eric Adams voiced concerns over a concerning pattern and emphasized that the city is putting in great efforts to put an end to the practice of riding on top of moving subway trains, often referred to as the ‘subway surfing challenge’.

Adams expressed deep sadness upon learning that yet another life has been lost due to the reckless act of subway surfing for social media attention. He emphasized the importance of educating everyone about this hazardous behavior and urged New Yorkers, as well as social media platforms, to help in spreading awareness. No amount of online popularity is worth risking one’s future.

Only a few days prior to his demise, tragically a 13-year-old boy met his end by riding atop a speeding train in Queens, New York. Since then, his grieving mother has initiated a GoFundMe campaign for her vibrant son who was once brimming with vitality.
