Christopher Lee's Saruman Will Appear In Lord Of The Rings Movie, 10 Years After His Death

As a fan with a deep appreciation for the rich tapestry of storytelling that is Middle Earth, I can hardly contain my excitement at the news that Christopher Lee, the legendary actor who brought Saruman to life, will once again grace our screens in “The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim”.

Christopher Lee led a near-mythical existence. He was acquainted with J.R.R. Tolkien and Ian Fleming, and later embodied legendary figures hailing from their fictional realms. Notably, he brought to life the sinister wizard Saruman in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit series. Remarkably, even after his demise in 2015, the actor will return to the silver screen posthumously to reprise his role as Saruman in The War of Rohirrim.

At New York Comic Con, Philippa Boyens, a longtime collaborator of Peter Jackson and co-writer of The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films, spoke with TheOneRing.net. She confirmed that Saruman, previously voiced by Christopher Lee, will reappear in the upcoming project.

In his recordings, I had the opportunity to listen to him conversing with us during the recording process, not just delivering his lines, but speaking naturally. Boyens explained that we modeled his performance from The War of Rohirrim based on a line from The Hobbit, specifically “Are you in need of assistance, my lady?” This line served as our foundation. We could see how many times he performed this line, decide which takes to use, search for alternative interpretations, and even slightly modify it – all while maintaining an authentic piece of Christopher Lee’s performance.

In the upcoming film, Lee’s deceased spouse, Gitte, granted permission for the crew to utilize archived performances of the actor, ensuring that only the genuine, ominous tones of Christopher Lee would be heard.

The anime Lord of the Rings movie takes place before both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, focusing on Helm Hammerhand, King of Rohan, and how his daughter, Héra, took on a powerful enemy.

The Lord of the Ring: The War of Rohirrim arrives in theaters on December 13.
