As a dedicated Guardian with countless hours spent traversing the cosmos in Destiny 2, I’ve witnessed my fair share of game mechanics that leave us scratching our heads. However, the “WeightGate” saga has taken the cake, reminding me of a cosmic roulette wheel that’s anything but random.
Since the launch of Vesper’s Host dungeon in Destiny 2, players have strongly suspected that certain combinations of perks on legendary weapons are scarce or even unobtainable. Bungie has confirmed that there is indeed a bug influencing the randomness of legendary weapon perks and has provided additional information about this bug, along with an estimated schedule for repairs and compensation.
The whole perk RNG saga has been dubbed “WeightGate” by the community, after players accused Bungie of having a secret perk weighting system in Destiny 2’s backend. The issue came to the forefront after Vesper’s Host released, when players noticed that it was almost impossible to get the new VS Chill Inhibitor grenade launcher with its most sought-after perk combination–Envious Arsenal and Bait and Switch.
Although an individual’s failure to acquire the ideal Chill Inhibitor might be attributed to randomness and bad luck, some players began to suspect that this was happening more broadly. Developer Newo, who is behind the third-party analytics tool RaidHub for Destiny 2, developed a new tool capable of tracking perk rolls on a large scale, and found a clear pattern emerging.
The data shows that each weapon has a dead zone where certain perk combinations are far less likely to drop–in fact out of thousands of drops tracked, only seven people have managed to get the Chill Inhibitor with its ideal combination of perks.
Bungie has acknowledged the problem and found the bug responsible for it, and they are currently working on a solution. The source of this issue seems to be a glitch within the Random Number Generation (RNG) system of perk pools in Destiny 2.
The latest announcement from Bungie states that they are planning to implement a hotfix on November 5, which aims to resolve an ongoing problem. Since this fix involves adjusting the code for a system affecting the entire game, they’ve allowed their team some extra time to thoroughly verify and confirm the necessary changes.
Besides examining ways to acknowledge the efforts of players who have unknowingly encountered this issue over a long period and collaborated as a community to unravel this mystery, Bungie is also considering special rewards. They mentioned that they are exploring several options not only to express gratitude for your diligent data analysis, but also to provide you with weapons that have weapon perk rolls with lower randomness than initially intended.
Currently, gamers can take advantage of a code found in Bungie’s post to obtain the Conquerors of Infinity emblem. This code, “VHT-6A7-3MM”, is redeemable on Bungie’s official website for you to acquire the emblem. Additionally, tech-inclined enthusiasts can anticipate a thorough explanation about the mysterious bug and how Bungie’s team have worked diligently to resolve it.
