As a longtime fan of Age of Empires, I must admit my initial excitement for Age of Empires 4 has been somewhat dampened by the recent developments. Three years into its release, it seems that the game is still grappling with issues that have divided the community and left many players, including myself, feeling frustrated.
In a delightful update, Age of Empires 4, which has been around for three years now, is gearing up to welcome another DLC. Relic Entertainment and World’s Edge expressed their gratitude to the fans for their unwavering support and confirmed that the much-loved strategy game’s fourth installment will be graced with its next expansion in 2025 (as announced via X).
Information regarding the theme and release date for the upcoming expansion of Age of Empires (AoE) 4 has not been specified. However, during the launch of season 9, it was hinted that further details about next year’s expansion will be disclosed in early January, which is when we can expect to hear more. It was also confirmed that Age of Empires will see a significant amount of new content in 2025.
The title could certainly benefit from some freshness. Despite a positive reception upon its release, recent Steam reviews within the last month have been only moderately positive (53% favorable). A quick look at Age of Empires 4’s product page indicates that issues began with the introduction of the new update and the 9th season on October 23rd.
Without needing to invest extensive time perusing the recent feedback, it’s hard to miss the criticisms. Primarily due to the updates made by the developers, ironically, they face criticism for both over-resembling and under-resembling Age of Empires 2. Additionally, there are frequent complaints about the AI (which is said to be excessively powerful even on easy settings), game balance (particularly concerning siege weapons), and challenges in multiplayer such as cheating and frequent disconnections.
Some internet users criticize the creators for failing to address player concerns, while others highlight complaints from professional gamers about the game’s more casual style. Additionally, some users have noted the absence of certain features in Age of Empires IV, three years after its release.
Indeed, it’s worth noting that a majority of reviews for Age of Empires 4 still carry positive ratings. This doesn’t necessarily mean the developers angered players but rather split them into those who favor and those against the update. Here’s hoping the creators can bridge this divide in future updates and DLC, bringing unity to the community once more.
