DOCUMENTARY
As a long-time fan of Idris Elba’s captivating performances and his unwavering commitment to using his platform for good, I am thrilled about his upcoming documentary, “Idris Elba: A Year of Knife Crime.” It’s not every day that an actor with such global appeal tackles a pressing social issue head-on, especially one as devastating as knife crime in the U.K.
In my perspective as a movie reviewer, I’m thrilled to share that the charismatic Idris Elba is set to star in an enlightening documentary titled “Idris Elba: A Year of Knife Crime” (working title) for the BBC. This gripping exploration delves deep into the grim reality and academic aspects of knife crime within the U.K. Throughout this journey, Elba will engage with offenders, bereaved families, law enforcement officials, and even Prime Minister Keir Starmer to gain a comprehensive understanding of this pressing issue. Moreover, the documentary also sheds light on Elba’s personal life choices, which led him down a distinctly different path, offering a unique perspective on the subject matter.
Many people think knife crime is an issue that doesn’t concern them, often viewing it as a problem confined to urban areas with predominantly Black and Brown communities and gangs – however, this is a misconception. Knife crime is also prevalent in white, middle-class, and rural areas, with perpetrators becoming increasingly young. I hope our movie helps dispel these stereotypes and encourages everyone to address one of the most pressing issues of today. This year has been difficult for me, but I remain optimistic.
The one-hour long documentary is being created by Elba’s production company, 22Summers, that he started together with producer Diene Petterle. This production is also overseen by director Ben Steele, known for “Bad Surgeon”. As of now, the release date remains undetermined, but in the U.K., it will be aired on BBC and iPlayer.
PRODUCTION
Sony Pictures Television (SPT) has recently established a fresh Belfast-based production company named “Hot Sauce.” This company is overseen by Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, former journalists who have made their mark in the drama world with their work on BBC’s “The Salisbury Poisonings.
I’m delighted to share that I’ll still be managed by United Agents here in the U.K., while my representation in the U.S. remains with WME, moving forward.
