As a long-time admirer of Anna Kendrick‘s talent and tenacity, I have to say her story about the unnamed director who tried to embarrass her on set is both infuriating and inspiring. It’s disheartening to see someone in a position of power use their status to belittle another artist, but it’s heartening to see Kendrick stand up for herself and get the last laugh.
During a chat on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Anna Kendrick was questioned about the most unfavorable direction she received while filming, and she recalled an instance where a director publicly criticized her improvisation abilities on set in front of numerous extras. The director later found himself eating his words when these very improv skills were showcased in the movie’s promotional trailer several months down the line. In the end, it was Kendrick who had the final chuckle.
Kenrick recounted a time when a director, amidst about 100 extras, said something like, ‘Why don’t you give it a try on the next one? Improvise something.’ So I did, and then the director yelled ‘cut,’ and approached me once more in front of everyone, saying, ‘Whoops, let’s stick to the script this time!’
Kendrick expressed that it seemed like a deliberate attempt to humiliate him, with the goal of asserting control, which felt uncomfortable and manipulative. To add insult to injury, what he had initially worked on was used in the promotional material. In simpler terms, he said, ‘That’s just low!’
Kendrick didn’t mention the film or its director, but she shared a story that left the “Happy Sad Confused” live audience in shock. A collective gasp filled the room when it was disclosed how the director had disrespected her. The crowd erupted in cheers as Kendrick gave the director a piece of her mind.
The actress famous for “Pitch Perfect” is now stepping behind the camera, with her directorial debut in “Woman of the Hour.” In an interview with EbMaster, she shared that venturing into her first press tour as a movie director felt quite unusual.
Kendrick finds it simpler to discuss specific instances within particular scenes or films that influenced him, rather than responding to the questions he’s asked most often – ‘What led you to this project? What motivated you to direct?’ – as he explained.
She mentioned, “There seems to be an assumption that I can articulate profoundly about the distinctive aspect of being a woman director. Yet, it feels odd when people ask me to address such weighty matters given my limited experience in this field.
