World Series Grabs Biggest Game 1 Audience Since 2017 as Dodgers Score Dramatic Walk-Off Win Against Yankees

As a lifelong baseball fan who grew up in the heart of Dodger blue and has been following the sport for decades, I must say that Friday’s Game 1 of the World Series was nothing short of electrifying! The sheer excitement of the dramatic walk-off home run by Freddie Freeman was enough to send chills down my spine.

The opening match of the World Series was a success for Fox on Friday, with the thrilling 6-3 walk-off victory by the Los Angeles Dodgers over the New York Yankees attracting the largest audience for a Game 1 of the championship since 2017.

15.2 million people watched as the Dodgers beat the Yankees at home in a thrilling 10th-inning match, with star player Freddie Freeman hitting a walk-off homerun with the bases loaded. The climax of the game saw a viewership of 17.8 million viewers at 11:30 p.m. ET, as reported by Fox Sports during the last half-hour of play.

The game was broadcast simultaneously on Fox Sports’ television and online channels, Fox Deportes, and the massive Spanish-language network Univision – a partner of Fox during the World Series.

The scarcity of a Yankees-Dodgers World Series has significantly increased interest in this year’s Major League Baseball championship, causing viewership to surge by 62% compared to the opening game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers in 2023. In contrast, that game only attracted 9.3 million viewers, falling short of hitting the 10 million mark.

In 2017, the start of the Astros versus Dodgers series attracted 15.3 million viewers according to Fox. However, this game later gained notoriety due to a sign-stealing and cheating scandal that would tarnish the Astros’ reputation.

On Friday night, the contest between West Coast and East Coast fan bases saw a clear victory for Los Angeles. The game recorded an impressive 19.1 household rating and 58 share in the Los Angeles market. In contrast, New York City – America’s biggest TV market – saw a 13.2/37 rating for the event. This indicates that a much larger percentage of viewers in Los Angeles watched the game live compared to viewers in New York.

Fox observed that the game played on Friday set a record for its Friday night broadcast ratings, matching those seen during the transmission of Game 3 of the 2017 World Series between the Astros and Dodgers.
