Cannes Award-Winner ‘Black Dog’ and SXSW Best Documentary Feature ‘Resynator’ Get Theatrical Releases from The Forge

As a seasoned film critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that the latest acquisitions by The Forge have piqued my interest. Having attended numerous film festivals worldwide and witnessed the rise and fall of countless cinematic masterpieces, I can confidently say that these two films – “Black Dog” and “Resynator” – hold immense potential.

The Forge now holds the rights to show “Black Dog,” a Cannes Award-winning film by Guan Hu, across North America, and has worldwide distribution rights for “Resynator,” the Best Documentary Feature winner at South by Southwest, directed by Alison Tavel.

More recently, The Forge has secured the North American distribution rights for the French horror-comedy “The Balconettes.” This film made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival and will be screened at the upcoming American French Film Festival in Hollywood.

Titled “Black Dog,” this movie, which was honored with Un Certain Regard’s award at Cannes 2024, narrates the story of Lang (Eddie Peng), a former convict who moves back to his hometown and develops an unusual connection with a stray black dog. Since they both are outcasts, their lives intertwine as they embark on a life-changing journey together. As per official synopsis, the film collected over $2.4 million in its first two days at the Chinese box office.

The film titled “Resynator” marks Tavel’s first directorial venture, and it delves into the legacy of its protagonist, inventor Don Tavel, as seen through the eyes of his daughter Alison. At ten weeks old, she was left bereft of a connection with her father following his untimely death in a car crash in 1988. Raised on tales of her “genius” dad, Alison’s life held no tangible link to him until she unearthed her grandmother’s attic, where she found her father’s synthesizer prototype. Initially intrigued by the prospect of restoring this artifact, Alison’s endeavor evolved into a relentless journey around the world that was facilitated by long-lost relatives, acquaintances, fellow inventors, and notable musicians such as Grace Potter, Peter Gabriel, Fred Armisen, Gotye, and Jon Anderson, according to the official description.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that these two movies will screen in 20 different markets scattered across North America by the year-end in 2024. Keep an eye out for further details such as additional festival dates coming your way soon!

The Forge, a production company, was founded in 2019 by veteran independent film producer, Mark Mathias Sayre. Among the distributor’s previous works are “Freedom’s Path”, “Low Low”, and “Boom: A Film About the Sonics”.
