Ever since the title “Venom: The Last Dance” was announced, fans have been speculating if this third movie truly marks the end of Tom Hardy’s character Eddie Brock and his Spider-Man symbiote. Both Hardy and director Kelly Marcel have frequently suggested that this film will conclude the trilogy, and it seems they might be correct.

In the climax of “The Last Dance,” Venom selflessly gives up his life to shield Eddie from a horde of xenophages, ferocious creatures that view symbiotes as their meal of choice. These beasts corner Eddie and Venom in Area 51, where the government has been secretly experimenting with symbiotes. After liberating the captive symbiotes, Eddie, Venom, and the scientists and soldiers transformed by Venom engage in a fierce battle – one that takes place near a massive vat of acid. In a bid to save Eddie, Venom separates from his host and ensnares the xenophages with his gelatinous form. He plunges beneath the acid container, bids a poignant farewell to Eddie, and immolates himself and the xenophages. With his symbiotic companion gone, Eddie departs for New York City in the film’s closing scenes and gazes upon the Statue of Liberty, realizing Venom’s dream of visiting the Big Apple.

Though Venom’s existence has come to an end, Earth still harbors remnants of these enigmatic symbiotes. In the movie, I found myself captivated by Juno Temple’s Dr. Payne, who transformed into a swift, purple symbiote – a transformation triggered by a childhood encounter with lightning. By the film’s conclusion, her powers remained intact. The post-credit scene unveiled an intriguing twist: Cristo Fernández’s bartender character emerged from the rubble of Area 51 following the symbiote warfare. Staggering away, he left us with a lingering question as the camera focused on a vial that once housed Dr. Payne’s symbiote, now seemingly alive as a cockroach brushed against it and received a shock. Just as these resilient insects can endure even a nuclear blast, this scene subtly suggests that Fernández’s character may possess hidden talents that enabled his survival.

In a chilling mid-credits sequence, I found myself listening to none other than Knull, brought to life masterfully by “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” director Andy Serkis. With an ominous tone reminiscent of Thanos, he declared, “Your champion has faltered, the King in Black stirs. Your realm will be consumed, and you’ll bear witness!” But who is this formidable figure responsible for the creation of symbiotes? I can hardly wait to find out more about Knull, the supreme being behind these powerful entities.

To put it simply, Knull is a relatively new comic book character, debuting in 2018, who shares ties with characters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In the comics, Knull is portrayed as an ancient godlike ruler of darkness, existing since the universe’s creation and being on par with the Celestials – those colossal space beings from “Eternals.” After beheading a Celestial, his decapitated head becomes Knowhere in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” series. Knull then creates the first symbiotes using powerful Celestial energy. Interestingly, Gorr the God Butcher from “Thor: Love and Thunder” steals Knull’s sword, All-Black the Necrosword.

In comic book lore, Knull is known as one of Marvel’s strongest antagonists. However, his debut in “Venom 3” might mark the end of his journey on screen, since Sony has yet to solidify any further plans regarding his or Venom’s storyline. Director Kelly Marcel, though, expresses an interest in a symbiote-centric future.

She shared at New York Comic Con that Knull is an immense character, one whose story can’t be wrapped up quickly. This brief encounter with Knull is merely a sneak peek. As for what lies ahead for him, only time will tell. Regarding Eddie and Venom, their story concludes here, but given the wealth of symbiote tales in our lore, there are many avenues to explore. Some intriguing hints might be hidden within this story that could set the stage for future adventures.

Marvel and Sony are currently drafting the script for Tom Holland’s fourth “Spider-Man” film, potentially providing another opportunity for fans to witness characters like Eddie, Venom, or Knull. However, no definitive decisions have been made. Interestingly, it’s been established that Eddie will be in New York by the end of “Venom 3,” which could make a meeting with Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man (a native of Queens), more likely – should there ever be a cross-over event.
