As a film enthusiast with an affinity for Philadelphia-set comedies and a soft spot for crossovers that make perfect sense, I couldn’t be more thrilled about this upcoming “Abbott Elementary” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” collaboration!
The exciting collaboration between ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” and FX’s “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” has expanded even further! Previously, it was announced that the characters from “Sunny” would appear on “Abbott” during this season. However, EbMaster has confirmed that as part of a two-episode event, the teachers from “Abbott” will visit “Sunny’s” Paddy’s Pub to spend time with the Gang!
Just last week, I, a die-hard fan of good television, got incredibly excited when the mastermind behind “Abbott,” Quinta Brunson herself, and the brilliant Rob McElhenney, star and co-creator of “Sunny,” announced that their shows would be teaming up for an extraordinary crossover episode. This fusion was a no-brainer considering both shows are set in the city of Brotherly Love (Philadelphia), and they air on networks under the same roof – Disney. While “Abbott” is produced by Warner Bros. TV, I can’t wait to see these hilarious worlds collide!
The main cast of “Sunny” – McElhenney, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito – have already filmed their parts for episode 409 of “Abbott”, with the plot spanning the entire half-hour. On Thursday, at the EbMaster’s Power of Women event on the red carpet, Kaitlin Olson announced a surprising crossover twist.
Olson shared that shooting the “Abbott” episode was extremely enjoyable. He also mentioned that they will be joining their world within a few weeks, making it even more thrilling. In other words, it’s been a blast for both casts to work together, as they come from different show platforms: cable and network.
As Lisa Ann Walter, who portrays the hard-nosed second-grade teacher Melissa Schemmenti in “Abbott”, mentioned to EbMaster that she desired Brunson to compose her scenes alongside Olson’s character Dee Reynolds from “Sunny”, we are curious about the demands the actress made.
Olson responded with a grin, “I was simply thrilled for them to let loose and be rowdy.” He clarified, “Such behavior isn’t acceptable at school, but it’s fine in a bar setting.
The “Sunny-on-Abbott” episode is set to debut first, and the executive producers, Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker, hinted that the character played by Day will be involved in a “fairly substantial plotline.
Initially, the idea of combining these two shows seemed more like a humorous thought than a serious proposition, given the potential clash in their tones. However, when Rob and Charlie joined our writers’ room for brainstorming sessions, we came up with some general concepts. As we exchanged ideas through written documents, an outline was developed. Both Rob and Charlie were very receptive to all suggestions, which helped put our concerns about the shows’ conflicting tones at ease. It wasn’t until filming with Charlie that these apprehensions truly vanished.
It’s not yet known what plans “Sunny’s” creative team have for the characters from “Abbott” in their show. The writing for Season 17 of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” was completed this autumn, and filming on the eight episodes has now started (anticipating a 2025 air date). Due to the actors’ busy schedules, including Olson on the popular ABC series “High Potential” and Howerton on Netflix’s “Sirens”, “Sunny” has had to adjust production accordingly.
