Is This Line From The Comeback or The Comeback?

I remember it like yesterday! When Val’s frustrated director, Ron, flipped her the bird after an argument on set, it felt like a punch to the gut. But Valerie Cherish was made of stronger stuff than that. She stood tall and gave as good as she got with her signature line, “Wished me well in the twilight of my career? It was a damned long twilight!

The recently released three-part Netflix documentary titled “The Comeback” recounts the incredible tale of the 2004 Boston Red Sox, a team that you are likely familiar with. Contrary to what might be implied, you definitely have heard of them: They staged an unprecedented comeback during a postseason series against their longtime rivals, the New York Yankees. This triumph marked the end of almost a century of failure, breaking the Bambino curse, and securing their first World Series victory since 1918. As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of this pivotal playoff encounter, directors Colin and Nick Barnicle have compiled interviews with numerous Red Sox legends and related figures to provide a more comprehensive account of the story than ever before.

Interestingly enough, Valerie Cherish, the character portrayed by Lisa Kudrow in HBO’s The Comeback, is not featured in the documentary. Valerie, a sitcom star struggling under the spotlight, battled to resurrect her career and personal aspirations. We were fortunate enough to have two seasons of The Comeback: one in 2005 and another in 2014. During this time, Val filmed a reality show, appeared in an unsuccessful sitcom, and faced countless attempts by the entertainment industry to belittle her at every opportunity. David Ortiz, on the other hand, has never experienced such a struggle.

What connection do these two comeback stories have with one another? Forget about that for now. Instead, focus on determining whether Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein, after winning the 2004 World Series, exclaimed in an excited manner, “WELL, I GOT IT!”. The quotes you’ll find below are taken either from ‘The Comeback’, which tells the story of how the Red Sox overcame the Yankees to win the American League Championship Series, or ‘The Comeback’, which narrates Valerie Cherish’s victory against Paulie G and winning an Emmy. Can you tell which one refers to which story?

“I just can’t put myself through it anymore.”

Base hit! A Red Sox fan said this after the Yankees went up 3 games to 0 in the 2004 ALCS.

Oof, strikeout: This was said by a Red Sox fan after the Yankees went up 3 games to 0 in the 2004 ALCS.

“Did you think I’d lay down and die?”

You survived! You knew this was Val performing “I Will Survive” in a music studio.

Gloria Gay-NAUR! This was said — sung, in fact — by Valerie Cherish while recording a performance of “I Will Survive.”

“I can’t get this shoe on!”

You got it! This was Val in the episode where she thought the Room & Bored cast were staging a walkout, only they didn’t, and Val had to race back to the set.

Nice try, Curt Schilling! This isn’t about the infamous bloody-sock game, it’s Val rushing to the set and unable to navigate her footwear.

“The middle finger! Did you see that?”

Yeah, you remember! When Val’s frustrated director, Ron, flipped her the bird after an argument on set.

Go back to the Bronx, ya bum! Just kidding, but yeah, this isn’t about abusive baseball fans, it’s Valerie reacting to getting flipped off by her director, Ron.

“Wished me well in the twilight of my career? It was a damned long twilight!”

Rocket on target! This was Roger Clemens talking about being put out to pasture by the Red Sox before joining the Yankees.

Swing and a miss! This was Roger Clemens talking about being put out to pasture by the Red Sox before joining the Yankees.

“Might be an Oliver Stone conspiracy theory, I don’t know!”

[Taps nose] Yep, this was a gleeful Yankees fan when asked if Aaron Boone’s injury paving the way for the Yankees to trade for Alex Rodriguez was Boone screwing the Red Sox all over again.

Bullshit! Val wasn’t into Oliver Stone conspiracy theories. This was a Yankees fan talking about the Alex Rodriguez trade.

“It did happen! It happened!”

Take a bow! This was Valerie Cherish after she won a long-awaited Emmy award.

Not like that it didn’t! This wasn’t anyone on the ’04 Sox. This was Valerie Cherish after she won a long-awaited Emmy award.

“GIVE HER ANOTHER TAKE!”

You got it, Jimmy! This was, of course, Valerie Cherish leading the studio audience of Room & Bored in a chant to pressure director Jimmy Burrows to give her another take.

You’re not gonna be heard on this one. If you don’t remember “Give her another take,” it’s time for you to watch Lisa Kudrow’s The Comeback.

“Nomar’s gone! I mean he’s gone — hard to believe.”

Nomah! You remembered that this was a Boston sports-radio host after the Sox traded away star shortstop Nomar Garciaparra to the Cubs.

No (… mah)! But honestly, a Nomar Garciaparra cameo on HBO’s The Comeback could have been pretty rad.

“I have A Rod in my back.”

Nerves of steel and a spine to match! Good job avoiding our little trap and remembering that Valerie Cherish does indeed have a steel rod in her back.

Gotcha! Sorry for the capitalization trickery, but no, this isn’t about Alex Rodriguez, it’s a reference to the steel rod that Valerie has in her back.
