Rey's New Star Wars Movie Sees Major Departure Again

As a dedicated Star Wars fan with a soft spot for both the franchise’s rich lore and the captivating characters it has brought to life over the years, I find myself once again at the crossroads of anticipation and speculation. The news of Steven Knight leaving the Rey movie project leaves me feeling a tad like Anakin Skywalker in the climactic scenes of “Revenge of the Sith” – a mix of disappointment and uncertainty about what lies ahead.

The screenwriting duty for the upcoming Star Wars film centered around Rey, previously held by another writer, is now with Steven Knight (creator of Peaky Blinders). However, it appears that he has stepped away from the project recently. Notably, Daisy Ridley will reappear in her role from the sequel series.

As reported by Variety (through Puck News), it appears that Knight has ceased working on the Star Wars film focusing on Rey’s character. There was no explanation provided, but Disney is actively seeking fresh talents to pen the script for this upcoming installment where Rey endeavors to establish a Jedi academy. Despite this change, Oscar-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy remains connected to the project.

In May 2023, Steven Knight became part of the Star Wars movie cast, replacing Damon Lindelof (Lost) and Justin Britt-Gibson (Counterpart) who had previously left the project. This move came after the announcement in April 2023 of three new Star Wars films, with the Rey film being one of them and initially planned for a theater release first. However, the highly anticipated premiere of “The Mandalorian” and Grogu is set for May 22, 2026, which will be the next significant event in the Star Wars universe.

Despite little information available about the upcoming Star Wars movie focusing on Rey, actress Daisy Ridley has been open to discussing it. For example, in March, she stated that it’s unlikely Rey will have children. Furthermore, Ridley has expressed a wish for John Boyega’s character Finn to return in this film. No official title has been given to the project, but it’s said that Star Wars Episode X: A New Beginning won’t be its name.

Currently, Knight is engaged in the making of the Peaky Blinders movie, which began shooting about a month back. This upcoming production features actors such as Cillian Murphy, Rebecca Ferguson, Barry Keoghan, and Tim Roth.
