Final Fantasy 7 Glitch Sort Of Lets You Save Beloved Character From Murder

As a long-time devotee of the Final Fantasy series, I can’t help but feel a mix of astonishment and a twinge of nostalgic melancholy upon hearing about this new glitch that skips Aerith Gainsborough’s tragic demise in Final Fantasy 7. For over two decades, her untimely end has been etched into the annals of gaming history, serving as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices characters often make in service to the greater good.

1997 marked a significant event in Final Fantasy 7’s storyline: the heart-wrenching death of a cherished character companion. This emotional scene echoed throughout the game and its subsequent spin-offs. The narrative of Final Fantasy 7 revolves around this moment, and until now, it appeared that there was no escape from it without using cheats.

Warning for those unaware of the character who perishes in a 27-year-old game: If you prefer not to discover it or wish to remain spoiler-free, it would be best to discontinue your reading at this point.

In a twist revealed by the speedrunner known as Luzbel, it turns out that two players, AceZephyr and Kuma, discovered an alternative path in Final Fantasy 7, which allows them to bypass Aerith Gainsborough’s demise at Sephiroth’s hands.

The way to pull it off is more of a glitch than a cheat. When the player is riding a chocobo on the world map, there’s nothing that prevents them from walking to the Forgotten Capital, the site of Aeirth’s murder. If Aeirth is in the player’s party, she’ll see her own death and fight alongside the player against Jenova. The downside to this approach is that players won’t have a high level during the fight, and according to Eurogamer, the game will “softlock” during cutscenes if Aerith is in the party after the timeframe of her death.

In the recent release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Aerith’s storyline was a significant aspect, underscoring her lasting appeal among fans of the contemporary series. However, a recently uncovered bug in the original game might prevent Aerith from dying, though it’s far from a flawless resolution, as she wasn’t initially intended to live through this ordeal.
