As a cinephile who has spent countless hours delving into the eerie and enigmatic world of Italian horror cinema, I can confidently say that this latest collaboration between Mutant and Unbox Industries is a chilling delight for any connoisseur of Dario Argento’s masterpieces. The meticulously crafted “Mad Puppet” toy, with its uncanny attention to detail, brings back memories of the unsettling little creature that left an indelible mark on me since first watching “Deep Red” back in 1975.
One of the chilling masterpieces from the mind of horror director Dario Argento is coming back to life, delighting fans who cherish his work and can now own it.
Collaborative efforts between toy companies Mutant and Unbox Industries will bring to life an officially licensed soft vinyl figurine, dubbed “Mad Puppet,” based on the unforgettable character from Dario Argento’s acclaimed film “Deep Red.” With attention to screen-quality detailing, this toy aims to capture the ominous aura of the Mad Puppet, meticulously recreating each characteristic to mirror the eerie little figure that has haunted viewers since its initial screening in 1975.
This special edition comes in an exclusive Mutant box adorned with artwork by Luke Insect, available only as one of 150 global copies. The significance of this item is amplified by a unique 7-inch single, which on the A side plays the driving main theme from “Deep Red,” and for the first time features a version of “Death Dies” on the B side complete with the Mad Puppet laugh intro pressed onto transparent green vinyl. Note that only 1,000 copies of this 45 are available worldwide.
As a cinephile, I can’t help but marvel at the enduring influence of “Deep Red,” often referred to as “Profundo Rosso” in its native Italy. This film, serving as a sequel to Argento’s acclaimed “animal trilogy,” solidified the fame of this Italian maestro and bolstered the popularity of the gripping “giallo” genre. Notably, it was the initial project where Argento teamed up with the legendary rock band Goblin, whose ensuing work graced the scores for “Suspiria,” “Tenebre,” and numerous other films. In this chilling tale, David Hemmings brings his musician character to life, delving into a series of murders committed by a mysterious figure donning black gloves – a staple element in giallo films. He shares the screen with Argento’s frequent muse and collaborator, Daria Nicolodi.
Spencer Hickman, one of the founders of Mutant, expressed excitement as they venture into the realm of collectibles alongside Unbox Industries. In a statement, he shared that their journey begins with an authentic Dario Argento artifact. ‘The Mad Puppet’, a uniquely strange element in any Argento movie, is what they will be unveiling, and they can’t wait to bring its peculiar charm to the public,” (paraphrased from original text)
Take a look at extra pictures for both the vinyl figure and the 45 record that follow. These items will be available for purchase starting October 28th, exactly at 12:00pm Central Standard Time, on the Mutant website.
