As a seasoned gamer with years of Overwatch under my belt, I must admit, the return of 6v6 battles in Overwatch 2 during Season 14 has me jumping for joy! The switch to 5v5 was a bit like swapping my trusty Widowmaker for a squishy Hanzo – not ideal.
In December, when Overwatch 2’s Season 14 starts, Blizzard plans to reintroduce 6-versus-6 matches through two different trials. The original game used this team size format, but the second version has been met with controversy for switching it to 5-versus-5 competitions.
According to Aaron Keller, the director of Overwatch 2, details about the upcoming 6v6 trials have been shared on the game’s official website. The initial test is set to take place during the first week of Season 14 (planned for launch on December 10). This trial will involve team compositions that feature at least one player from each role, with a maximum of three per role. Later in Season 14, Overwatch 2 plans to experiment with the traditional “2-2-2 composition” while making some adjustments.

In simpler terms, Keller shared that the tests for Season 14, along with future ones, will not only evaluate our players’ readiness for larger teams but also provide opportunities to experiment with new strategies to avoid issues we faced before in a potential change. Regarding Overwatch 2, there appears to be much discussion about the 6v6 format. Specifically, Keller mentioned that he didn’t think 5v5 and 6v6 could coexist in the sequel earlier on, but now he is open to the possibility.
6v6 gameplay for Overwatch 2 was first proposed in July, while the game recently kicked off Season 13: Spellbinder and underwent significant updates to Sombra. In addition, a new Halloween mode called Junkenstein’s Laboratory has been introduced, which will be accessible until November 4th for the hero shooter.
