Gearbox Head Responds to Terminally Ill Fan's Wish to Play Borderlands 4. „We're Going to Do Whatever We Can to Make Something Happen”

As a gamer with a heart full of empathy, I can’t help but be moved by stories like Caleb McAlpine’s. Here’s a fellow Borderlands enthusiast, fighting a relentless battle against cancer, yet refusing to let go of his passion for the series that brings us so much joy. It’s heartwarming to see the gaming community rally around him, and even more inspiring to witness Randy Pitchford stepping up to make his wish come true.

Yesterday, a post was shared on Reddit by Caleb McAlpine, a 37-year-old enthusiast of the Borderlands series. In this post, he revealed that he had been given a terminal cancer diagnosis and doctors predicted, in the most pessimistic scenario, that he might only have 7 to 12 months left to live. Even if his body responded positively to chemotherapy, his life expectancy would still be less than 2 years.

Because of this situation, Caleb sought assistance from Reddit users to connect with the creators of Borderlands, as his wish was to experience an early version of the fourth game in the series before he passes away. Remarkably, Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software, responded positively and shared some encouraging news on platform X.

Caleb and I are currently exchanging emails, and we’re determined to take any necessary steps to bring about some outcome.

Caleb confirmed this in his Reddit thread, thanking everyone for their help and noting how amazing the online community is. The player is also running a fundraiser on GoFundMe, where you can help him cover his medical costs.

It’s worth noting that similar instances have occurred within the Borderlands community before. Back in 2019, a dedicated fan named Trevor Eastman, who was also battling cancer, got to play an early version of the third installment after he posted about it on Reddit. Surprisingly, Gearbox Software went above and beyond by creating a legendary weapon called the Trevonator in his honor.

As of now, we’re still in the dark about many details regarding Borderlands 4. The game was officially unveiled during Opening Night Live in August, but only a brief teaser trailer was shown, leaving much to be discovered. The game is set to feature four playable characters and will maintain the series’ signature wit and humor. It’s scheduled for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S consoles, with a projected launch date in 2025.
