Sarah Hyland Tears Up Giving Message of Courage to Domestic Abuse Survivors: ‘It’s All Too Easy to Feel Isolated, No Matter How Strong You Are’

As a seasoned movie critic with a soft spot for heartfelt stories and resilient heroes, I was deeply moved by Sarah Hyland‘s acceptance speech at the EbMaster Power of Women gala. Her courage, compassion, and dedication to raising awareness about domestic abuse and animal welfare are truly commendable.

Sarah Hyland, famed actress from “Modern Family” and host of “Love Island USA”, spoke at the yearly gala for EbMaster Power of Women in Los Angeles on Thursday evening, an event hosted by Lifetime. During her speech, she was presented with the first-ever EbMaster Courage Award given by Purina, in recognition of her efforts to raise awareness about animal welfare and domestic abuse.

Receiving this bravery award has led me to ponder the essence of courage. Every day it takes courage just to rise up and confront the world, aware that others may not grasp your struggles,” Hyland expressed in her speech. “It’s quite natural to feel lonely and uncomprehended, regardless of how resilient you are.

Hyland commended the sponsor of the award, Purina, and its animal rights activist partner RedRover for their Purple Leash Project. This project aims to make domestic violence shelters welcoming for pets, as many abuse survivors find it difficult to leave due to lack of pet-friendly options. In fact, only around 20% of such shelters accommodate animals. The Purple Leash Project seeks to give these survivors the chance to bring their beloved pets without forcing them to make a heart-wrenching decision between their safety and that of their pets.

Starting from 2019, Purina and RedRover have distributed over 50 Purple Leash Project grants to shelters nationwide, as stated by Hyland. The world of seclusion these victims are in makes it essential not to underestimate the impact of letting them realize they’re not on their own.

To further Hyland’s purpose, it’s crucial to boost understanding and simplify access to support networks. As a survivor of domestic abuse, this cause is deeply personal to her. In an interview for EbMaster’s Power of Women, she expressed that for millennia, victims have been silenced and unable to tell their stories. However, by speaking openly about her own experiences, she aims to inspire change in this regard.

As a cinema enthusiast, I firmly believe that by openly discussing domestic abuse, we can empower more individuals, regardless of gender, to speak up about their experiences with their loved ones. This is crucial because abusers often isolate victims from their support system as their first move. By keeping the conversation going, we can help create a community that these people can lean on. It’s vital for us to continue this dialogue, so we can extend a helping hand to those in need.

As I graciously accepted my recent award, it was none other than my “Modern Family” family member, Julie Bowen, who introduced me – a role she mastered as my on-screen mom for an incredible 11 seasons. Catch her heartwarming introduction here below!
