CBS Studios Killed ‘Brady Bunch’ Revival Over Cindy Brady Actor’s Hate Speech; She Says Her Political Views Made Her ‘Too Dangerous’

As a devoted fan of the Brady Bunch, I find it deeply disheartening to see Susan Olsen’s journey unfold in such a manner. The transformation of a beloved character from television screens into a figure embroiled in controversy is truly a testament to the complexities of life and the power of individual choices.

Susan Olsen, who played Cindy Brady on “The Brady Bunch,” recently asserted on the “Walk Away Campaign” podcast (as reported by Vanity Fair) that CBS canceled a revival of the show because of her backing for Donald Trump and her contentious views on topics like Covid vaccines and the LGBTQ+ community. However, it’s important to note that this isn’t the complete picture. Firstly, the project was based at CBS Studios and hadn’t been presented to networks or streaming services yet. Crucially, though, sources suggest that it was abandoned not due to her political views but because of offensive remarks made by Olsen, including derogatory comments about the LGBTQ+ community which had previously led to her dismissal from a radio job for hate speech.

Two years ago, the revamped Brady project was on the table, though it seemed uncertain if any script had actually been penned. Regrettably, it never progressed beyond those initial stages due to Olsen’s actions halting its development. The concept involved depicting the Brady Bunch kids as grown-ups. As it turns out, Olsen’s character, Cindy – the youngest Brady sibling – was intended to portray a libertarian podcaster, as the actor shared.

On the podcast, Olsen stated that he had a conversation with his TV family and his representative. They were all expressing regret but insisting that they couldn’t include him in the project due to unyielding reasons. He was taken aback, remarking, ‘It feels like I’ve been canceled.’ A character I’ve portrayed for more than five decades is now off-limits because I’m considered too risky. I responded with, ‘Alright, good luck with the production, I hope it sells well.’

CBS Studios chose not to comment on the matter. As per Olsen’s statements, negotiations for a “Brady Bunch” reboot had been ongoing for approximately a year. It is said that during the initial stages of development for this revival, Olsen was inquired about her political views by the showrunner and the son of Sherwood Schwartz, the creator of the original “Brady Bunch.” Notably, Olsen had previously been dismissed from the “Two Chicks Talkin’ Politics” radio program in 2016 due to expressing anti-LGBTQ sentiments on social media. Allegedly, she responded to a critic (who had expressed disapproval of her views on social media) with a text message containing offensive slurs and hate speech.

For nine years, starting in 1969 and ending in 1974, Susan Olsen played Cindy Brady on the original series “The Brady Bunch.” She also made appearances in the spin-off animated series “The Brady Kids,” the variety show “The Brady Bunch Hour” in 1976, the TV movie “The Brady Girls Get Married” from 1981, and the 1990s revival series “The Bradys.

As reported by Vanity Fair in their summary of Olsen’s interview, Olsen mentioned that the revival aimed to bring the Brady Bunch family into contemporary times. One of Jan’s descendants was going to identify as transgender, and one of the Bradys was going to have a partner who is Black. However, this didn’t feel right to Olsen. Instead of making it so overt, she suggested, “Let’s not make things so obvious. Let’s create a situation where this Black spouse has a strong bond with another Brady character. Establish their relationship in such a way that this isn’t just a token position.

Olsen stated that the “Brady Bunch” revival has effectively ended, as he discussed this topic further in a recent episode of the “Walk Away Campaign” podcast. You can listen to his full interview here.
