‘One of Them Days’ Trailer: Keke Palmer and SZA, in Her Acting Debut, Do Anything to Make Rent Money in R-Rated Buddy Comedy

As a film enthusiast who’s been around long enough to remember the days when R&B artists stuck to singing and comedy duos were rare, I must say that the trailer for “One of Them Days” has piqued my interest. Keke Palmer and SZA, two powerhouses in their respective fields, teaming up for a buddy comedy is an exciting prospect.

Sony recently unveiled a preview of their upcoming film titled “One of Them Days,” which stars Keke Palmer and SZA in their first joint appearance as leads in a buddy comedy rated R. This marks SZA’s debut in acting, following her Grammy-winning achievements in the music industry.

The story revolves around best friends and flatmates Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA). One of those challenging days is about to unfold as they learn that Alyssa’s boyfriend squandered their rent money. Faced with the threat of eviction, the pair embarks on a humorous, desperate scramble against time to save their home and maintain their friendship.

The video preview displays the extraordinary measures taken by two companions to cover their rental expenses. Their actions range from giving blood, scaling a phone pole to recover costly Air Jordans, and seeking a loan, albeit with an amusingly poor credit rating.

As a movie enthusiast, I had the pleasure of reviewing Lawrence Lamont’s directorial debut, a project penned by Syreeta Singleton under Issa Rae’s production banner Hoorae. Having worked together on Rae’s hit hip-hop series “Rap Sh!t,” where Singleton served as showrunner and I directed several episodes, this collaboration marks an exciting leap forward for both of us.

I’m thrilled to share that I’m part of a stellar ensemble for this project! Alongside Palmer and SZA, we have Lil Rel Howery, Janelle James, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Maude Apatow, Katt Williams, Joshua Neal, Aziza Scott, and Patrick Cage. Moreover, I was fortunate to join the cast back in August, as EbMaster exclusively announced – Dewayne Perkins, Amin Joseph, Gabrielle Dennis, and DomiNque Perry were also added to the team!

The movie originally sprang from the CoCre Lab at Sony Pictures, a joint initiative between ColorCreative and Sony Pictures designed to nurture new, talented screenwriters from diverse backgrounds in creating their debut studio films.

In a December 2022 episode of “Saturday Night Live”, Palmer served as the host, while SZA graced the stage as the musical act for the first time together.

The production team behind this project consists of Rae and Sara Diya Rastogi from Hoorae, Deniese Davis from ColorCreative, Charles D. King from Macro Film Studios, James Lopez and Poppy Hanks, with Singleton serving as both director and co-producer. Palmer is the star and executive producer under her Big Boss banner, with Sharon Palmer also involved. The project is being co-financed by Macro Film Studios.

“One of Them Days” releases to theaters on Jan. 24. Watch the trailer below.
