Horizon Zero Dawn Remaster Comparison Shows Big Visual Upgrades

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of gaming experience under my belt, I must say that I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming release of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered! The comparison between the original version and its new upgrade, meticulously put together by Reddit users Lanny16_I_think, Nixxes, and Guerrilla, has truly piqued my interest.

When Sony’s Horizon Zero Dawn was just seven years old, it wasn’t immediately clear that it would receive a remastered edition. Nonetheless, with the release of Horizon Zero Dawn Remaster only a week away, a group of three gamers have undertaken the task of providing a comprehensive comparison between the original game and its updated version.

Reddit users Lanny16_I_think, Nixxes, and Guerrilla meticulously compared the two versions of Zero Dawn, using an early copy of the remastered version to align with screenshots from the original game. In every case, the remaster noticeably enhanced aspects beyond just graphics, making the world of Aloy appear more vibrant and authentic than before. Here are some images below, captured by Lanny16_I_think on PC.

For instance, the town sequence in the original Zero Dawn appears to have fewer NPC characters and features an overly orange color palette that can be slightly disconcerting.

In a thrill that can only be felt by true fans like myself, I must say that the revamped edition has truly outdone itself! Not only does it boast a greater number of lively background characters, but it also bid farewell to that once-persistent orange tint. What’s left is an eye-catching, vibrant world that seems almost too real to be a game!

The Reddit discussion additionally examined the enhanced skin textures and rich backdrop details in the remaster, but certain images from the original Horizon Zero Dawn don’t align with Guerrilla Games’ vision for the title. In a post on X, Jan-Bart van Beek, Art Director at Guerrilla Games Studio, pointed out that the image displayed below was due to an error in the game’s lighting system.

In Horizon Zero Dawn, our initial foray into open-world gaming, we found ourselves navigating through a sprawling landscape spanning more than 30 square kilometers, all under a 24-hour light cycle. Due to its vastness, it was quite a challenge to ensure every hidden corner functioned properly regarding lighting, as one small area occasionally presented issues.

Later on, van Beek discusses that the game employs an auto-screenshot mechanism called ‘autobot’, which captures images from numerous in-game locations at various points during the day. However, he emphasizes that assessing these outputs remains a manual task for humans.

On October 31, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is set to launch on both PC and PlayStation 5. If you’ve previously owned Horizon Zero Dawn, you can upgrade to the PS5 version for a cost of just $10.
